Castle in the sand by Deana Johns

jamien42 ๐Ÿšซ

Since she doesn't accept any feedback in SOL I thought I would try here. Great story but two glaring errors.

$1000 bills. Removed from circulation in 1969. How did he magically get them for the triplets?

A Sargent would never be a pilot in th US Air force, especially in the early to mid 90's. He would be a mid level 1st LT with 2-3 years to make Captain. As for no mandatory co-pilot, maybe but not realistic.

I was amused by a far smaller blooper - Catarina was praised for speaking English without conjunctions.

ETA In today's chapter, Catarina used a contraction, which is what I assume the author really meant. I had one of the characters in one of my stories speak without contractions - not being a native English speaker - and it's very hard to catch them all. I probably didn't, but so far nobody has complained.

Do you realize this is fiction? There are lots of things you can do in fiction that you can't do in real life

There's also knowing WTF you're describing. It's known as "due diligence".

You can adapt details to better fit a story, but it's better what's accurate before making things up on the fly. But, often their national differences (British, Traditional British, American, Australian, New-Zealand English, etc.). There are both major and minor differences between them. That's especially true for common phrases and usages.

Not all of the bills have been removed from circulation. While the Treasury policy is to withdraw any $1000 bills it receives they are still legal tender.

Simple search online shows as of May 30, 2009, there were 165,372 $1,000 bills known to exist.

Every now and then they come up for auction or you can go to a high end coin dealer who will know who has and are willing to sell one but while a bank will only give you a $1000 dollars for the bill The Swicegood Group a high end auction sold a single bill for $4,050 so you better have deep pockets.

@palamedes

As far as I recall, those high-denomination bills are mostly used by foreigners (ex: Saudi Arabia) rather than domestic Americans, as it's easier to pay off large sums (ex: bribes, illegal arms sales, weapon systems, etc.).

But, it's been quite a while (Never) since I last needed a $1,000 bill.

Exactly. Not something you just have lying around, especially 3 of them. Krugerrands would be a lot more believable.

A few 1000$ bills would have come in handy today. Just to reduce the amount of 100$ bills needed. Person wants cash. Legal reasons(on my side).

Weird story. The MC first takes care of the women he rescues and then randomly lets them screw some men who he doesn't even know. And the women who apparently are in love with him jump on these unknown men.

It's unusual to find a harem story on SOL where equality exists.

AJ

jamie_oliver ๐Ÿšซ

@jamien42

It isn't a harem story if the girls sleep with those outside. But the issue isn't that. It just happens randomly. There is no build up to it. They just suddenly one day decide to sleep with other men they don't even know. Just for the heck of it.

The premise earlier was that the MC couldn't satisfy them all and was upset about that - but even when given the option to overcome that with some weird mechanism that suddenly crops up, the MC just says shove it and then the story just goes weird.

I just spotted this story in the "to be archived" section, and saw all the votes and went "damn, I won't have time to read it all..." but if there's sharing and such as you describe, idk if I'm really missing much. I guess it's an older story someone uploaded? Wish they'd tagged it properly in that case.

@anubelore

It is not archived, and is available. If you are a premium member, just download the EPUB.

They probably aren't premium and that would be the reason they don't have time to read it.

@akarge

I thought non-premium members could still download stories, just one chapter at a time. One of the privileges of being a paying premium member is that you can download the entire story in one go. Supporting the website has benefits.

Slightly diverting topics, I vaguely remember a book that I read MANY years ago. Maybe in the 60s. A mystery, probably aimed at juveniles. "The Missing Ten Thousand Dollar Bill." It's from 1960.

Apparently they made those bills primarily as was to transfer bills from treasury departments to federal reserves, etc. Just to keep the books staight.

I had started reading this story as it posted. Saw a posting update this morning that final chapter posted. I thought great, soon as I finish Nicholas's Story, I'll read the last 3 chapters. Surprise, Castle in Sand is now premium. It would have been nice if the author had warned us. Was planning to vote "10" when i fisished, but i will not be voting now. Oh well, another example of why I (almost) never read a story in progress.

Same here. Read 96 chapters - then bang the final chapter is unavailable. Oh well...
Thank you to Deana, 1 thru 96 were great!

Ditto

I believe this is a case of unintended consequences. The story was supposed to become premium as soon as it finished posting, however, no one considered that it would happen the "instant" the last chapter was posted leaving all free members hanging.
That's just the way the cookie crumbles sometime.

"Supposed to become premium..."

I missed that. Did author say that? I'm not finding author blog or comments?

I feel like the last page of a book is missing or someone stole a piece of a puzzle. Well, I guess I will never read any more from this author.

I added an archiving block to the system and set the story to not be archived.

It's back in general availability.

Thank you for making it available!

May I ask about author profile? From tidbits in the story, I wonder if this was written long ago? Is author among the living? There is nothing on the Deana Johns page.

Thank you for operating SOL!

AFAIK, this story is first released in the 90' (i think year was '96) on ASSTR, under writer name D. J. Pedersen ...

Can someone explain to me what is relation between D. J. Pedersen, and this pen name , please ?

@BlinkReader

I've got the first twenty chapters as text files from ASSTR on 7/0/2020.
I'm sure I had a version on my old system I lost around that time.

PS: I am assuming that D. J. stood for Deana Johns. O'm not going to speculate as to what happened to the Pedersen.

Thank you very much!
