Their Wonder Years: Season 1: Fall 98

Tantrayaan 🚫

Bit of a self-promotion here. But please do check out my story if you haven't so far. It is currently rated 8.64 atm

Equal parts coming-of-age drama, slice-of-life comedy, and slow-burn haremlit, Arc 1 explores the messy, magical chaos of first love, found family, and finding yourself in a foreign land.

Synopsis of Season 1
Set in the fall of 1998, Their Wonder Years follows Bharath, an idealistic 18-year-old from India who arrives in Atlanta dreaming of freedom, romance, and the American college life. What he finds instead is culture shock, cafeteria food, and a dorm room with roommates he couldn't have dreamed existed. But as he navigates midterms, heartbreaks, and unexpected friendships, Bharath is drawn into a whirlwind of love, loss, and self-discoveryβ€”with a growing circle of friends and women who each challenge and change him in ways he never imagined.

This and your other story are 2 of the main stories I come to this site to read. Highly recommended both stories to readers

'a dormmates'?

@Tantrayaan

This is the funniest and best story I have read on this site.

Highly recommend to anyone looking to have a fun time. The erotica is top notch as well but my favorite is the comedy and humor the author has in the story.

jamie_oliver 🚫

@Tantrayaan

If you like humor - try Chapter 15 - DMVocalypse. You don't need the rest of the story. It is amazing as a standalone humor chapter alone IMO.

Even the last 2 chapters - 19 and 20 are damn funny.

These stories are great fun, and are a reminder of a sort of timeless truth: everybody in college is just a little bit quirky.

You've read some good receipts then. Not sure why you would be looking for a story there though.

I'm sure all the others that have liked the story in this thread are "sock puppets" as well, I suppose?

jamie_oliver 🚫

@Cheshire_Writer

Let's see what you've written Cheshire_writer. I guess they must be works of art.

You must be a sad miserable person. All your posts on this forum are about disrespecting someone or the other.

You called another writer a schizo or something, asked for a way to downrate stories more, told someone else that they don't know anything about BDSM when they asked for recommendations etc.

I hope you get a life and feel better soon. Actually, read this story. It's really funny and may make you feel better as a person. I'd recommend Chapter 15.

Cheshire_Writer 🚫

@jamie_oliver

I tried reading it, at best i had the idea the writer is trying to combine Friends with the original Wonder years show.

And that the only knowledge they have is from those shows. to whit, I dunt give a shit.

For you nor for them. SO shut the fuck up or suck a sock.

Tantrayaan 🚫

There is nothing in the story related to the TV series the Wonder Years. If you haven't read it - that's fine. Please don't post falsehoods.

I started reading the story but I gave up. I was uncomfortable with the exaggerated Indian stereotyping. (Would someone with admission to a US university to study really be that unworldy? No, don't answer that!) But what killed it for me was the author feeling it necessary to try to make every sentence hilariously funny. As a Brit, I like my humour more subtle and nuanced than being bashed over the head by a 4 x 4 all the time. For me, less is more.

But you liked it, as is your right, and I guess that's due to cultural difference.

That's fair. Of course it may not be your cuppa? :)

Most Brits I know love a bit of slap and tickle. Almost all the popular TV shows from Britain that I know of are physical comedies and farces. So I don't know if you are a typical Brit (perhaps you're stereotyping the stiff upper lip bit?)

Shows like Allo Allo, Yes Minister, Mind Your Language, Mr. Bean, The IT Crowd, Dr. in the House, The Office, etc. all have in your face comedy. They seem to be well received.

jamie_oliver 🚫

@jamie_oliver

More shows that I loved to watch in the past.

Black Adder, Benny Hill, Dad's Army. So many good memories. Pity there aren't many from the golden age of Brit comedies from the 70s and 80s.

They did well in the UK, but I assume you have heard of them since they were well received in the USA because of their lack of subtlety.

Would I be right in thinking they had short episode lengths? Half an hour, an hour at the most? Now scale that up to long form, as Tantrayaan has done with his story (a website predicts an average reader would take 30 hours to read the 575000 words so far). I imagine few people would be able to tolerate even eg ten hours of Mr Bean in one sitting.

ETA I believe full length movies of those shows, where made, performed moderately at best, hence very few sequels.

And how could you not mention Monty Python!

Not all the chapters are humor based. In fact a large number of them are not. Regardless... not your thing - it's all good. To be honest, what I like about the chapters are his honest takes on relationships. It is not a typical story.

His other story Yantra Protocol is even better in my opinion. The relationships between the characters are what stand out.

Monty Python are movies are they not? I was talking about tv shows.

I really dislike Mr Bean, the TV shows and the films, but the origins were in a series of commercials for Barclay's Bank and I thought those were very good. An instance where the adverts were more interesting than the surrounding programmes.

Btw 18 yr old sheltered kid who hasn't had to face the world outside? Know loads of them. Yes they can be very naive. Most kids (even 20+ year olds) can be very naive depending on how the household that they've grown up in.

Tantrayaan 🚫

@awnlee jawking

I was pretty naive when I went to the US as a 17 yr old. I was brought up in a pretty sheltered childhood... so a lot of of it is pretty similar to things I encountered in the US as a kid there.

I'm not sure what you find stereotypical - but you are entitled to your opinion.

There is humor in some of the chapters. Some works, some doesn't but the entire series is not meant to be a comedy. There is drama and other heartfelt moments there as well.

It's fine if you don't like it but there is no intentional stereotyping happening. Not sorry if it offends you but a lot of the situations etc are things that happened to me or those around me at that point in time.

Let's all post about stories that we have no interest in reading.

This topic was posted in the Story Discussion and Feedback thread. That means the OP wants feedback. Most of the posts have been very effusive about the story, perhaps too much so. So I was presenting a moderating view without resorting to the trollery of you-know-who. At least I started the story and persisted for a few chapters before deciding it wasn't for me.

I haven't voted on the story and it's my policy not to. Having story reviewing experience from elsewhere, I feel I would judge stories too harshly, which would be unfair on the authors.
