Deliberately so, I believe.
I may be remembering this wrong, but part of the reason BD chose to do that was to keep Ben's ethnicity uncertain.
Many years ago on his FB forum there was a post about the whole family being Asian or not based on his other stories, and if I remember correctly he replied he wanted to keep them neutral.

You would have to ask him. Honestly I'm not 100% sure on the exact discussion and response, it was almost 15 years ago. But no last names ever for the entire family, and no racially identifying features. In contrast to John Billionaire.
