More likely he read about it ... this was re-discovered something like 8 years ago !

Norway exported glacial ice by ship as far as to the Mediterranean for hundreds of years. This trade declined in the late 1800s and early 1900s with the upcoming of artificially produced plant ice.
There is a Wikipedia article "Ice Trade" But it's North America centered and doesn't cover the early Norwegian Ice Trade.
