General feedback to critics...

Justin Case ๐Ÿšซ
Updated:

If you send me a message with criticism, especially ELEVEN messages in a row, then make sure your author name can be searched WITH RESULTS first.

When I see this... it means you are nothing but a troll...
"Sorry! We have no authors whose name starts with 'XXXXXXX' ... yet"

(EDIT to add.. I welcome feedback, pointing out mistakes, and help. It was the MASS number of 'back to back' PM's that seemed a little 'obsessed'.)

Those who can, do.

Those who can't, teach.

Those who can't teach, become administrators and critics, for they have neither skills nor abilities.

You should be thankful that you even received feedback eleven times in the first place.... ๐Ÿ˜›

I guess you are right.
Just seemed excessive to get ELEVEN PM's in a row, back to back, from the same person.

Kinda had that 'stalky' and 'obsessed' vibe to it.

Stalkers are cool, after all, who else is going to feed your cats when you are away on holiday...

TRUE !!

I'm just afraid they won't get the rice to anti-freze ratio correct, and the cats will suffer rather than die.
LOL
(I am NOT a cat person... AT ALL)

How do you know the feedback was from an author, rather than just a reader?

I think he was hinting at not wanting any criticism from people who aren't authors themselves. And if they are authors, he wants to check their work to determine whether or not he deems them worthy of critisizing him.

@Sarkasmus

No. That's not it.
I really did mean ELEVEN PM's, from the same person, in a row.

Did the eleven PMs contain information relevant to improving your story? I guess with that many, they were focused on spelling and punctuation issues.

I haven't read those PMs, but were they "stalkery"-stalkery, or ADHD-stalkery?

I have quite a few people on my contact lists that blow up my phone by sending every sentence of what they're trying to tell me as a separate Message. Let's hope we can blame Smartphones and Facebook for this.

"I'm an overeducated, know-it-all, literature snob" type of ADHD-stalkery

Justin Case ๐Ÿšซ

@awnlee jawking

It's not that big a deal after all.

I now know who it is, and the PM was from his 'user name' instead of his author name.
He seems to have a history of some OCD about other people's writing.

@Justin Case

If a reader is in the process of reading a story, finds a mistake, sends feedback, is that criticism? What if that reader found 10 more mistakes? I can understand that there are some authors that want feedback like that, and some that don't. It's as if I'm insulted that just because I don't have "author" as a title therefore I'm worthless at anything written.

As stated above, I know who it is now.
And... I am done with hacking on the guy because of his mental dysfunction. That is cruel.

He just doesn't use author name to comment. When he comments.
Repeatedly.
Over and over.
Back to back.

LOL

And no, I won't name him.

Were all 11 concerning the same thing?

How much time between PM's?

Yes, I have run into a few like that in here.

And I largely have the same response. They have no story posted here, yet spend a lot of time attacking almost every aspect of what I write. I simply tell them they are free to never read one of my stories ever again, and to feel free to let us know when they ever write one, so we can tell him all about what we think of it.

awnlee jawking ๐Ÿšซ

@Mushroom

They have no story posted here

You can't know that. Some authors have very different nicknames. For reasons of personal stupidity, mine differ by an underscore.

Actually, this individual is a serial troller, and at least three other authors here have told me he has done the exact same thing to them. as well.

In fact, there was a thread about the individual in here last year.

I recall a thread about someone leaving questionable comments on stories, but the OP complained about receiving a barrage of PMs.

Are they the same person?

There is another about one who leaves them in story comments. Possibly a reason why many do not turn them on.

Dicrostonyx ๐Ÿšซ

@Mushroom

To be fair, being a literary critic an being an author are two entirely different skills. No matter how many stories someone has posted it does not mean that they are necessarily a good judge of other author's works and not having stories posted does not mean someone cannot provide useful criticism.

I'd say it's the behaviour of sending multiple comments in a relatively short period of time that is the indicator of bad intentions, not whether or not someone has stories on SOL.

To be honest, I occasionally send back to back feedbacks. I see a typo and fire off a correction. Then, I maybe find another one in the same chapter. So I send that one off. Usually I limit myself to two per chapter, but...

I usually read SOL on my phone, and it's hard to put multiple corrections in one email. If I'm on my computer, I can use multiple screens and a text editor to do it in one email per chapter.

Also, if I bother to send in corrections, it means I think it's a decent enough story to be worth the time taken.

Apart from not reading SOL on my non-existent phone, we appear to be the same person. I follow the same rules for guerilla proofreading!

Same here.
I refrain from sending corrections if it's just a minor typo e.g. missed the key and hit its neighbor instead.(e/r, r/t,...) or the key above (f/r, i/8, d/e,...)

HM.

Write something.

Then you can have the 'Amateur Author' title just like me.

Edit to add..
(That comment means that I don't consider myself 'learned', professional, or even competent. I just type up my thoughts and ideas and send it out to be enjoyed by anyone as twisted as I am.)
