Slight adjustment to stories stylesheet

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

I made a slight modification to the stories stylesheet.

I changed the < blockquote> tag (or {block} for formatting) to remove the monospaced font, gave it a faint border and slightly larger text.

Let me know what you think. Good change? Bad change?

Example:

Dinsdale 🚫

@Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

I tend towards "Bad change", sorry. It is the border which feels unnecessary.

The Outsider 🚫

@Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

I'm afraid I agree with Dinsdale. I find it distracting.

Agreed with Dinsdale and The Outsider. The box/shadow border tends to offset the enclosed text way out of context with preceding/succeeding text. Gives an impression of completely removed from the main text, like an editorial insertion or remark.

I do not like it either.

It jumps out at me. It shouldn't do that.

I don't mind the shadowing of the box, though I think it'd be better to use a subtle background color to the box instead. The larger font size really bugs meβ€”it makes the blockquote look like it's not part of the main story.

I don't like it. It looks like it doesn't fit into a *text* story but more like a web page. For some blocks the boxing might look appropriate but a lot of other blocks will look out of place.

@Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

alright. I hear you. I reverted the blockquote tag to left and right indentation with a line on the left. No other formatting.

Much better. And better than before. Thanks!

I looked at your example, but couldn't notice anything different. Then I read your last comment.

If I may suggest, for the blockquote tagged section of text why not just indent it and put it in italics. That way it looks different enough to stand out without being overbearing.

why not just indent it and put it in italics.

I would strongly vote against italics.

1. If the blockquote is long, italics can get tiring to read.

2. The author may have italics in his blockquote, then what?

3. You don't know how the author uses italics so it could be inconsistent with his formatting and therefore confusing to the reader.

I'm kinda wondering why that,errr, I'm not even sure what to call it, example? was used. Because it contained the formatting in question, or because it was a dormant account? I have a mental vision of the poster logging in and getting excited at the sudden increase in views. And then I wonder, did any of the people who read it because of this thread, vote on it?

Yes, I should be doing a million other things...

Didn't like it as it's not my normal cuppa. As such I didn't vote.

As far as formating, I didnt notice any difference with my normal device and browser.

I don't normally read anything that short, so I'll just take your word that something is different.
As for the style, as a reader, I don't have a problem with it.

something is different

It wasn't the story that changed. It was the way the blockquote part in the story was formatted. Now it's indented both right and left with a vertical line down the left side. That's what looked different before Lazeez changed it back so you're not seeing the change many of us didn't like. And the change was for all stories that used the < blockquote> or { blockquote}, not just this story. This story was used as an example. It was actually a good one to use because it was so short.

As to the story, I didn't read the story. I simply looked at how it was formatted.

I did a search in the text database for a blockquote tag and the first story to popup was that one. So I used it. Nothing beyond that.

Would a site for sore eyes have a styesheet? ;-)

Yes, it's called an 'Eye See You Right' stylesheet.

But be careful not to confuse your eye socket with an electrical socket.

I like it, but I would prefer just having the indentation of the text without the bar. I send some of my stories with the margins adjusted, and the still come out as block text.

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

@oldegrump

I send some of my stories with the margins adjusted, and the still come out as block text.

If they come out in blockquote that means there was a blockquote tag, not just margins adjusted. Probably whatever software you're using is putting a blockquote when you adjust margins.
