File size

Remus2 ๐Ÿšซ

When posting a story, does SOL break up a large file into
smaller bits/chapters or is this something defined at the time of posting?

Dinsdale ๐Ÿšซ

@Remus2

A chapter exceeding around 30Kb will be split into chapters of around that size. That does not always work very well - I once saw a split occur in the middle of a word, a two-letter word.

I don't think that's true anymore. I remember Lazeez mentioning something about splits not being needed anymore because current internet speeds can handle larger files easily. Or something like that :)

ok, that split of a two-letter word was 11 months ago so the change is fairly recent.

There may also be stories in the database that have an inappropriate split that needs correcting. If you see one, just send Lazeez a message through the 'Contact' link and he'll fix it.

I did, and the reply mail is how I know exactly when it happened.

Used to have an automated process to deliver 55KB pages. Not anymore.

Although some time it is necessary as some authors submit a 100,000 word files as one part with no chapter splits or anything. That's too much text for some mobile devices and they choke on it.

@Remus2

Are you referring to page splits or actual chapter splits?

@Kaveman

I was referring to a docx file. I'm writing on my phone due to damaged hands. The phone came loaded with Polaris 5 which only has text and Docx available.
No one will ever accuse me of being a software expert, so I'm learning that as I go. I've only just now figured out how to get the italics to work on the software I'm using if that tells you anything. I'm good at a lot of things, but computers and software are not in their number. After I broke my fingers again last year, they just don't want to line up right for a keyboard, so I'm using a single finger to type this message and everything else. It's a pain in the ass.
In specific, the word count on the file is 11,600 so far. A bit much for a single chapter, so I either let the software here separate it, or start a new file. I didn't know if the software here would do that or not. Therefore my question.

I don't believe the SOL Wizard software ever broke a file into chapters. Chapters are the control of the author.

You can have one file with chapter breaks or, like I do, each file is a chapter. When I submit the file to SOL's Wizard, each file begins with story title then on a new line my author name then on a new line the chapter name and then the text for the chapter. In the Wizard, you tell it what chapter(s) you're uploading.

Somewhere in the forums long past, is where I recall getting the idea (mistaken apparently).
Thanks for the clarification.

It USED to break things into pages. For example, one of my chapters with a typical length of around 12,000 words, 72,000 characters, would be broken into two PAGES. One of Tefler's chapters from Three Square Meals would normally end up as four pages - but they were never chapter breaks.

Of course, that's now gone as Lazeez (all praise the great codemaster!) has modified and upgraded things.

I think management may have done it to early, very long stories. But I could be wrong.

Sort of. Management at SoL have never split stories into chapters, but they used to split chapter / stories lodged as a single large file into pages based on the 55,000 characters limit mentioned earlier, but even that has now changed.

I was sure I read an old story recently which had a note that the author's submission had been split into chapters because of its length. It's the only one I've seen with that note. Oh well, perhaps I'll encounter it again one day.

I seem to recall that type of note as well, with the observation that the additional chapters would not affect the number of stories you could read.

Way back when, I used to run a script to split long long submissons if the author didn't do it.

Then I moved to the automatic paging.

When it was manually split, I would insert a notice in the cover stating that has been done automatically and the chapter splits don't mean anything.

The story I remember was well worth reading. If someone with some brains is up to a challenge, I'd be interested in a list of stories that were split that way. I reckon there could be some forgotten gems amongst them.

In the advanced search page, content search at the bottom, put the following:

story was submitted in one piece

and select 'Exact match' from the drop down menu.

You'll get 342 stories.

That sounds familiar. As it is, I'm getting better with the software I have and have some work arounds for some of my problems. So each chapter will be it's own file.

@Ernest Bywater

That rings a dusty bell.

Catman ๐Ÿšซ

@Remus2

There are so many things about computers that I don't know, I just dump stuff and hope for the best. I have submitted all my stories as one file per story and either Lazeez or the system broke them down into Chapters. 161KB broke down into 2 chapters, 307KB into 4 chapters and 343KB into 5 chapters

Chapters or Pages?

The system used to break long stories into pages because of limitations of old browsers. But I can't imagine it creating chapter names.

I'm familiar with the page breaking and I wish it were still available as an option :-(
