Why "Martians"?

richardshagrin ๐Ÿšซ

There are lots of stories, even on SOL where residents of Mars are "Martians". How does the "t" get into a resident of Mars? Marsian would make more sense to me. Or Marsan, like a resident of America. Maybe even Marsish like a resident of Britain is British. And England has English. Germany has German, I could go for Marsan, oops I already voted for Marsan in connection with American. France and French are hard to follow. But Mars and Marsh would make more sense than adding a "t". We could add "er" to Mars to make Marser, it would be like New Zealander. I prefer something like Greenies, from a current serial on SOL following an earlier highly rated story here.

If you are from a Mart, Martian would make some sense. Someone who farts is a farter. If you barter you are a barterer. Barter is to trade. You are either a trader or a barterer. There are lots of historical uses of Martian in stories from hundreds of years ago. Why?

It makes as much sense as someone from France being French and not a Francian. I'm sure if you check a decent entomology dictionary you'll find the cause is the original Latin or Greek.

edit to correct typo.

@Ernest Bywater

the cause is the original Latin

"Latin adjectives from the name of Mars are martius and martialis, from which derive English "martial" (as in "martial arts" or "martial law") and names such as "Marcus", "Mark" and "Martin".[15][16]"

From Wikipedia which has so much about Mars I can't read it all.

It's a bit simpler than that. Mars is named after the Roman God Mars(Ares in Greek Mythology). Mars is the God of War, which gives you "Martial." So because Mars is "the star(planet) of war" then someone coming from there is a Martian.

So because Mars is "the sar(planet) of war" then someone coming from there is a Martian.

Ok. So if women are from Venus and Men from Mars, it follows that their union would result in martial relations.

That explains SO much.

:)

I don't know why, but it's apparently older than I would have thought.

Google N-gram for Martian and Martians

There are occurrences of martian going back to the oldest parts of the corpus and even Martians goes back to the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

The age got me curious so I tried to look up the etymology. I found this:

https://www.etymonline.com/word/martian

late 14c., marcien "of, pertaining to, or characteristic of the planet Mars" (originally in reference to astrological influence), from Latin Martius "sacred to (the god) Mars; pertaining to (the planet) Mars," from Mars (genitive Martis; see Mars). From mid-15c. as "of or pertaining to the god Mars, warlike;" also sometimes "of or pertaining to the month of March" (1620s). The noun meaning "an inhabitant of the planet Mars" is attested by 1877.

@Dominions Son

genitive

OK the Latins had a reason to add t to mars. I wonder if genative has anything to do with genies, who grant wishes. I still am going to support using Greenies instead of Martians.

Not in Latin. Djinn are from Arabian mythology.

Laos, Laotian.

"Phasing out the term 'Laotian'
With a growing understanding of the word 'Laotian' and its attachment to war and colonialism, the Lao diaspora have consciously begun phasing it out โ€“ but complications ensue. The word is deeply ingrained in Western culture and even in policy. The US Census, for example, states that Lao-Americans must identify themselves as 'Laotian'. Many Lao migrants, especially those in the restaurant industry struggling to sell Lao food, need to defer to the more recognisable 'Laotian' label โ€“ and in some cases hide under the 'Thai' label โ€“ so they can survive.

Phaengdara Potter hopes that by shedding the term 'Laotian', many will be free "to celebrate and reclaim their national identity or specific ethnic identity." The more that Lao people can say that they are 'Lao', the more the general public will use it.

"Then we can just be done with the word 'Laotian'," she says.

So what do we make of all this? If you plan on travelling to Laos, Dr. Sweet has the following advice: "From within Laos definitely don't use 'Laotian'." In other words, use 'Lao'. This should also apply when outside the country: it's 'Lao' food, 'Lao' tradition and so on."

If you are from a Mart, Martian would make some sense.

For example, residents of St. Martin/Sint Maarten. They're referred to St. Maarteen (singlar and plural), rather than Martians.

Maybe you should ask, "Why not Martians?"

But Mars and Marsh would make more sense than adding a "t.

I suspect that Marsh Alien agrees with you. He hasn't posted for years. Area 51 internet must be slow.
