Question for Leonard Nimoy et al

awnlee jawking ๐Ÿšซ

Is it physically possible to raise an eyebrow and smile at the same time? I wrote that one of my characters did this then, in the interests of realism, tested it myself.

TIA

Is it physically possible to raise an eyebrow and smile at the same time?

Yes. As practised by Roger Moore (Ideal porn star name) & more recently Emma Watson.

I applaud your restraint in not carrying that through to its normal internet conclusion.

Roger Moore

Sadly he no longer can. If anyone could, he'd be a strong candidate. But is there any photographic evidence?

Emma Watson

Surely she's too woke to smile :-(

You asked if it were possible. Then you discard examples for being dead or for their politics. Neither of which hinder their ability to raise an eyebrow whilst smiling. Both have appeared many times doing just what you asked.

There is both photographic and video evidence.

Get thee to google... (Or quack quack fuck off, if you prefer)

I searched images for Roger Moore raised eyebrow. The vast majority of the results didn't even have a raised eyebrow. On the pictures that did, none showed him smiling.

I think I might have to edit that bit out of the story :-(

Look at video instead of images. For either Roger or Em.

I hail you king of the interweb!

However, I suspect that actually works against me. The eyebrow ascends, but when he starts to smile, the eyebrow is already descending. He might be unable to do both at once.

You are overthinking this. Firstly is isn't impossible. Secondly, your character can do it. No suspension of disbelief required. So just write it and move on.

Tongue rolling is another one. Between 60-80% of people can roll their tongue into a "tube", but the rest can not. Rolling is a dominant gene, and simply some can do it, others never can.

I have freaked out many because I maintain about 50% dexterity with my toes. Even able to pick up individual objects with them and am able to do some manipulation of them that way.

doing that sure saves on hurting a bad back, and I find it very useful for picking up clothes on the floor etc.

I've played backgammon against Thalidomide victims. They were able to do everything with their feet and toes, including manipulating the pieces, rolling the dice and turning the doubling cube. And they weren't clumsy either!

Christy Brown (5 June 1932 โ€“ 7 September 1981) was an Irish writer and painter who had cerebral palsy and was able to write or type only with the toes of one foot. His most recognized work is his autobiography, titled My Left Foot (1954). It was later made into a 1989 Academy Award-winning film of the same name, starring Daniel Day-Lewis as Brown.

I just had to go and try that. My tongue is long enough as the crow flies, but when I try to curl it up to touch my nose, it's pulled back into my mouth.

From a google image search for tongues, I appear to have an unusually thick tongue ;-)

One of the earlier Chinese Communist leaders had a mousey tongue. Chinese language spelling in English can be challenging. Not all that long ago their capital was Peking now spelled Beijing. Mousey Tongue is currently spelled Mao Tse-tung. Fortunately you can still go to a Chinese restaurant and order Peking duck.

The Chinese government changed the spelling of his name in the mid 1970s when they adopted the Pinyin style. It is now spelled Mao Zedong. That was at the same time they changed the spelling of Peking to Beijing.

For those that do not recognize them, the first appears to be in "The Man With the Golden Gun", towards the end before his duel with Scaramanga.

The second, from his TV series "The Saint". He is actually my favorite Simon Templar actor, followed closely by Vincent Price.

Spock and Kirk helped me quit smoking Angel Dust (PCP sprayed on mint leaves)
A long time ago back in the late 70's I used to smoke Dust and one time while very high I was watching Star Trek and Kirk and Spock started ragging on me about it. The next day I cold stopped it.

Yes.

Just because you can't do it ... hell, I can't do it, either ... doesn't mean that others can't do it. There's a lot of people who can't bring their fingers into the correct position to render the Jewish Vulcan hand salute. For example, when Celia Lovsky played T'Pau in Amok Time, she couldn't make the salute, so she positioned her fingers in her lap before raising them to return Spock's greeting.

Replies:   awnlee jawking

@StarFleet Carl

I can make the Vulcan salute but, when I do, I can't feel any muscles competing with each other. But when I try to raise my eyebrow and smile simultaneously, it feels like the muscles on the raised eyebrow side of my face are competing.

I guess I need a doctor with expertise in facial musculature to provide a definitive answer.

I guess I'm the ultimate mutant for this. I can touch my nose with my tongue. I can pick up things with my toes. I can do the Vulcan Hand Salute. And I can smile while moving my eyebrows around. But that might be because I'm also in the group that can flex their scalp muscles(which means some limited ability to move my ears--at their base), although some googling on that suggests many people can be trained on how to do it if they didn't figure it out on their own.

Being in the club of people who can move their eyebrows, I just tried it. It's possible, probably easier with practice.

My quick attempts at it did indicate that facial muscles would pull the eyebrow down slightly (at least going by feel, didn't pose in front of a mirror) as you start to smile(or more properly, go into a full-blown grin). It certainly is possible to do, you just won't be able to fully raise the eyebrow while doing so.
