Arrows and Bolts

PotomacBob 🚫

As far as I can tell from stories on SOL, crossbows use bolts instead of arrows. Is there a difference between the two? If not, why use a different name?

Bolts are generally shorter than arrows.
I suggest looking up some video on the use of either. The difference will be obvious.

Most crossbow bolts are made from a much thicker wood and about a third the length of an arrow. Also, the notch is often different, as are how the fletches (arrows) are done.

Yes.

The fun part is when you add a ballista into the mix, because they typically didn't use fletching on their ammunition. They actually used javelins. (Not the modern ones, the old time ones.) If you watched Game of Thrones, that's what the Iron Fleet was shooting at the dragons.

Depends on the size and type of the ballista.

Real historical ballistas came in a number of sizes from large siege engines to something small enough to be operated by one person.

Some of the big ones fired spears and javelins. Some of them fired worked rounded stones,

The smaller ones fired special made bolts that were larger than a bolt for a crossbow that could be carried and fired from the shoulder by a single individual but were still smaller than a javelin would be.

I did not watch any part of Game of Thrones. A ballista is ammunition in some kind of weapon?

A ballista is a weapon, not ammunition. Conceptually, it's an oversized crossbow that's big enough that it takes at least two people to operate it efficiently.

The ammunition for crossbows were often called, "quarrels."

"quarrels."

That fits right in with what is posted on the forum. Lots and lots of quarrels.
