I suspect there must be stories on SOL where the male hero is plain, the male equivalent of a Plain Jane. But I couldn't think of a term to use to search for such a story.

Average Joe? If not in quite same sense that I assume is why it's used in the 'Swarm' stories.
GI Joe was kind of average, back in world war 2. And then he became a doll. And now he is President of the United States of America. Joe Biden.
And then there is my sister, Jolene. Joe Fat might be an alternate for an average Joe. Jane apparently was picked because it rhymed with plain. So maybe Plain Wayne would work.
