Epic versus Long

StarFleet Carl ๐Ÿšซ

Just curious, if anyone thinks that the SOL categories on the sidebar influence Clitorides voting in any way.

I'm just trying to figure out how my ATH-B1, at 434,400 words is in both Long and Epic Categories, and the only other one I see in both are Oyster's Community, Moving On, at less than 70,000 words, and Rollie's Reaper Security Consulting, at 188,000 words.

Someone had to approve them for both categories. These are the category definitions. Is it because it's more than 100,000 words but below 500k?

*** I just went and looked and it's not so my guess is shot! :)

Long Erotic Story of the Year:

Any erotic or sex story, between 50,000 and 100,000 words (250KB to 500KB of text)

Epic Erotic Story of the Year:

Any erotic or sex story, more than 100,000 words (500 KB and up of text)

Epic, in these cases, have two distinct and utterly different meanings, so confusion is almost guaranteed. In one, it's EPIC in scope (i.e. multigenerational), while in the other, it's an "Epic" tale due to size (ex: The Brothers Karamazov. So it's entirely possible to have an Epic 35,000 word novelette competing with a epically sized 800,000 word never-ending story.

But according to sunseeker's definitions, 100,000 words is barely a longer novel and not even close to a standard-sized sci-fi novel.

They're not his definitions. They're from the Clitorides page itself.

Flash Erotic Story of the Year:
Any erotic or sex story, up to 1,000 words (or 5KB of text)
Short Erotic Story of the Year:
Any erotic or sex story, between 1000 and 10,000 words (or 5KB to 50 KB of text)
Medium Erotic Story of the Year:
Any erotic or sex story, between 10,000 and 50,000 words (50KB to 250KB of text)
Long Erotic Story of the Year:
Any erotic or sex story, between 50,000 and 100,000 words (250KB to 500KB of tex)
Epic Erotic Story of the Year:
Any erotic or sex story, more than 100,000 words (500 KB and up of text)

That's why I was trying to figure out what happened.

Lazeez, any idea?

The clitorides definitions are strictly about size. Not how awesome it is.

There are two people moderating the submissions and one of them seems to just approve but not fix submission. Before the end of the month I'll go thru all the submissions and see if I can spot anything.

But I also fix when things get reported. So when a story doesn't fit its nomination, I appreciate hearing about it.

@StarFleet Carl

Are there any qualifying requirements for author nominations (best new author, author of the year), such as a minimum number of words written in completed stories?

Here are the category definitions taken from the Clitorides page which was where I got the other ones too.

When you go to make a nomination there is a "Category Definitions" link right beside the Category box.

Given the other categories (flash, shorts and medium), it's no wonder that "Epic" is only defined as a slightly longer novel. But then, I wouldn't expect a contest like the Clitorides to encourage the truly Epic length stories (600+ chapters), as it would take so long to evaluate them.

The problem then would be several things.

First, those are generally "never ending" stories. And the Clitorides require that the story actually be finished. Not the sort that people will just write forever and never conclude.

Then, they have to get people to vote for them. I think only a real fan would read through that many chapters, then send a nomination.

Now.

Back in the day, ongoing stories were eligible. (There's probably a story or two still ongoing actively that would've been eligible back then...)

@Crumbly Writer

More to the point, each year would likely only have one eligible story. Really, most 'epics' are broken into multiple books, which on SOL usually translates as being posted as separate stories. (Number 7's "Second Chance" is one of the few exceptions, as is DejaVu Ascendency. There's probably one or two more...)
