Readers Speak Out ...

Paige Hawthorne ๐Ÿšซ

My vaunted Research Department โ€” teenage son โ€” took a look at reader interactions with yrs. truly. He identified a dozen or so methods of contact. These communiquรฉs are tabulated โ€” in descending order of frequency โ€” as of latish December, 2020:

1) Story downloads 502,398
2) Homepage visits 118,936
3) Blog access 43,312
4) Votes 9,008
5) Library 3,366
6) Comments 1,144
7) Followers 596
8) Blog emails several hundred
9) Story emails a few hundred
10) AF (authors' favorites) 6
11) Reviews 3
12) Forum inquiries a couple

(The number of Big Clit voters is unknown. At least so far as Research could figure out.)

I know my numbers are anemic compared with more popular writers, but I wonder โ€ฆ do any of you real writers track stuff like this? Would your frequency list be in a different order?

Not that I pay the slightest attention to reader scores.

Sorry, no, so I have no idea.

What makes you think you are not a real writer and others here are? I consider every author here on SOL a real writer. The differences in quality are arguable but they are still real writers.

real writers

Those that are pseudonyms, particularly writers that use multiple pseudonyms are probably not real writers. And there are unreal writers who write fantasy stories, their worlds are unreal. And if you write about motion pictures, you may be a reel writer. If your pseudonym is mostly numbers or a few letters without any vowels, those aren't real words.

Then there is the Grinning Dick, who snarks and pun-ishes all with terrible puns.

ystokes ๐Ÿšซ

There are people on this site that I would never read one of their stories in a million years yet in every sense of the word they are still real writers.

Jason Samson ๐Ÿšซ

and my stats trail far behind you, Paige.

But I discovered that reading thoughtful comments fuelled my writing sprees, so in my later stories I actually made conscious changes to the structure and release schedule to encourage feedback. It worked; I went from two or three comments per story to 60 and then over a hundred for my last two.

I'm guessing I'm saying its possible to deliberately skew the stats slightly if that does anything for you :)

real writers

Paige, I think we're all 'real writers' on here. Some of us are simply more productive than others. Some of us have a different skill set than others. What sets all of us apart is that we're willing not just to put our thoughts down as words, but that we're also willing to share those with others on here.

I'm always curious as to how I compare to others, even though we're not in competition with anyone other than ourselves.

If you've ever had a story reviewed, you'll find your author name on the page of reviews.
And if you're paying attention to the other forums, how many times has someone mentioned you by name? Shocked the hell out of me when I saw someone make a post that they were looking for stories on here similar to mine.

Crumbly Writer ๐Ÿšซ

@Paige Hawthorne

I often track statistics like that (though never that comprehensive), including 'back in the day' when you could include code to access reader locations, dates and method of access. Unfortunately (actually, fortunately for EVERYONE else), you're no longer able to access those types of information (other than via Amazon, which is why they're raising such a stick concerning Apple's anti-tracking privacy policy).

It was always amazing how many readers I had in repressive dictatorial or middle-eastern nations (such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, etc.).
