Politics Tag

Updated:

Hi! Another question, because I'm still kinda trying to suss out some things with readership on this site!

So I'm kinda trying to figure out what readers would expect if they saw the "Politics" tag on a story.

Is this, real life political commentary (of the sort of discussion that's in some other threads)?

Or is it political theory discussion? That is, if I write a story that through events examines the relationship between capitalism and socialism through dialectic of some sort, but not in actual reference to contemporary political situations necessarily, does that count as "Politics"? (An example of this would be Herland, I think)

Or is it just any sort of political scheming, even in completely fictional worlds such as in things like Game of Thrones?

These feel like three different things, if at times subtle in that distinction. What do you all think readers would expect? Like, if a reader intentionally searches for the "Politics" tag, what are they actually looking for?

Or is it all munged together, of the "ask three people get six opinions" sort?

And please don't devolve this thread into actual politics discussion; I'd much rather keep it focused on just the topic of the semantics of the tag in the minds of the readers. Thanks again for your help, everyone!

@Tessa Void

The site definition reads 'Stories with political atmosphere or events'.

Personally I suspect it will be used mainly for squick avoidance eg 'A Fresh Start': plenty of readers got upset when it got all political.

There are 227 stories with the Politics tag. I suggest you go to the Category Search Results, click on Politics in the Other category, and search. Reviewing some of the stories that have had Politics assigned to the story by the authors will help you figure it out. It seems to be a fairly broad category. If you write a story you think has politics as one of its themes, assign the tag. It appears to me just about any governmental change, in a fantasy world or one somewhat like ours, fits the Politics tag.

The highest rated story is by Jay Cantrell dealing with a monarchy. The lowest rated story says "When a muslim cleric arrives in the almost-all-white neighborhood of Pride Heights, events are set in motion that will change for a long time both the place and the balance of power between the US government and their foes in the Middle East. With special help and participation from pretty white girls."

Good luck. If you can't figure it out, ask Lazeez. He knows everything.

Lazeez gives his (and thus the site's) definition as "Stories with political atmosphere or events." To me, if I see the Politics tag, I expect a story where politics at some governmental level is a large part of the plot, i.e. not just mentioned in passing. And I will say that a large number of stories appear here without that tag that would warrant it be included when not.

Not having ever watched Game of Thrones, I couldn't possibly speak to that example. But something like the two Elizabeth movies starring Cate Blanchett would be a good candidate if something similar ever appeared here in print.

A couple of Lazlo Zalezac's stories would have qualified in my mind even though Lazlo claimed they weren't intended that way. Reset Manifesto and the Jade Force of Misera series are good examples to name only two.

And I will say that not all of the tags have been there since the beginning of SOL, so it's possible that stories about politics which are not tagged as such predate the existence of the politics tag.

The oldest stores on the site date to 1999, but the oldest story tagged as "Politics" is dated 2005.

Makes sense.

Although I'd oft accused of including politics in my works, due to the characters I include (their opinions, not necessarily mine) but also my general liberal bent (showing minorities struggling while rich politicians and political groups stack the deck against them), but I've NEVER used the politics tag (since the stories aren't inherently political, the politics are entirely character driven).

A case in point is my Singularity story, where the political opposition (Republican) is opposed to NASA's latest technology investments (since they diverted funds from the usual military suppliers like Boeing), personally attacking the returning astronauts on political grounds. (Stated in those terms, maybe I should, though again, that only covers a couple specific scenes, spearheaded by specific characters, rather than the entire books.)

maybe I should

Yeah. Otherwise, those who believe you're attacking their politics will be quite irate. Because, well, you are basically attacking a political party portraying them in such a way. Likewise, if you accurately portrayed politicians on the left, that would also be attacking...

Which is my point. It's a significant part of the story, especially as you're aware (or should be) just what a red flag those views are to the more conservative reader who may not exactly agree with those politics. Sort of like including the M/M tag in stories that contain such activity so as to warn off the readers who find homosexuality abhorrent. Generally, proper tags coupled with a good description go a long way towards warning off readers from stories that won't appeal to them.

Since you know such readers exist, might not it be a proper thing to do out of respect if for no other reason?

I don't clearly understand the tag use either. What I've seen more times than not, is that the tag revolves around U.S. politics.

From Websters:

Definition of politics

1a : the art or science of government
b : the art or science concerned with guiding or influencing governmental policy
c : the art or science concerned with winning and holding control over a government
2 : political actions, practices, or policies
3a : political affairs or business especially : competition between competing interest groups or individuals for power and leadership (as in a government)
b : political life especially as a principal activity or profession
c : political activities characterized by artful and often dishonest practices
4 : the political opinions or sympathies of a person
5a : the total complex of relations between people living in society
b : relations or conduct in a particular area of experience especially as seen or dealt with from a political point of view.

By that definition, there are multiple stories that should be tagged that are not. Australian, Canadian, UK, etc politics in particular.

As to what to expect? Hate and discontent mostly. It's a subject that tends to piss people off fast if it doesn't fit their world view.

My presumption is that a reader intentionally searching for the Politics tag would be looking for something along the lines of the old dead tree book, "The Man". Maybe something along the lines of a Clancy political thriller.

In answer to your question, though, the answer to all three is yes. Ernest's recent stories, "Secession", and "Also Reap" are definitely current political commentary. Politics is practically the only tag he's given, and the only tag needed.

Political theory discussion ... I'm not familiar with the story you referenced, but yes, it would be.

For the third, the game of power is the Game of Thrones. That very much was politics. In all four of my novels on here, I've included it as a sub-tag, because while political intrigue isn't the primary that's going on, I'd rather have it as a tag included, instead of someone complaining that I didn't have it. Especially when you have someone become ruler of a province, an Empire, or the world.

I'll admit, the book which I got the most flak for was one where I had a purposefully stereotypically character, Clara, make several outrageous claims, but that was character driven, as she was the type who listens to FOX news (long before Trump), which attacked the protagonist based on spurious religious reasons rather than political ones. So, I'd suggest that if you include any reference to either Fox or MSNBC, that you automatically label is as Political.

Unfortunately, that's unlikely to stop the hate mail or 1-bombing, but I've long noted that some of my most dedicated readers (those who read each chapter within a few days of it's posting) are 1-bombers.

Aha, I think that makes sense. Thank you everyone; your responses were quite informative!
