Tools for graphical representation of timeline and relationships

gaplingjinn 🚫

Do you prefer to use tools to plot timelines for your stories? I am reading books from an author. Through multiple books in multiple series, she has created an universe where timelines are intermingled. I would like to plot them so it's easy to check.

As an author, do you like to create relationship chart to keep track of your characters? What software do you use to do so? Any software or tool that works with multiple spouses and incest?

I stated with spreadsheets, but those are clumsy. I created a Wiki which, by using some plugins, I can create relationships, as well as run queries. See, for example this page and the linked pages, all of which are generated by queries...

It takes a bit of work to get setup, and of course you have to enter all the data, but once it's set up, adding data is easy (using templates)

There's a cute free program which is called of all things, Timeline. It allows you to create a time line as long as you want and mark important events.

I use Scrivener for writing and planning. Sometimes though you need a timeline.

EDIT: Michael, I like your wiki idea and am going to give it a spin.

Mediawiki + Semantic MediaWiki does the trick. Let me know if you need tips on making it work for you.
