How to make a physically small character seem big

PotomacBob ๐Ÿšซ

I'm working on a story in which the main character is a physically small female. The MC is shorter than Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I saw many obits that referred to the 5-foot-1 RBG as "tiny."
Then I saw a photograph of Joe Biden, who I never thought of as particularly big. But in this photo, he was standing behind a stand with his arms outstretched and he looked big. I recall photos of Ike and Richard Nixon in which they used outstretched arms, and I never thought either of them looked especially big.
The MC in my story is too small to wear "petite" size women's clothes, and must buy ready-made clothes among the "girl's" selection (what she actually does is buy used stuff from thrift stores and, with the help of a next-door seamstress friend, re-does them to fit.)
Having explained more than was probably necessary, the question is, what can I have the MC do that can make her LOOK larger than the munchkin she is? High-heels come early. Her best feature is her very long hair (it comes down to below her butt).
Any suggestions welcome.

Give her an even shorter friend.

Graduate from regular high heels to platform shoes.

If it were a movie, you could have her in the foreground while others are further from the camera (This is how the did the hobbits and Dwarves for the Lord of the Rings movies).

If it were a movie,

Aim the camera up enough so you don't see the crate she's standing on.

Attitude.

If she can pull off overbearing and bossy, she can make people react to her personality rather than her stature.

Whatever you do, don't have her date a NBA center, since being more than two feet shorter than someone she stands next to frequently won't help.

If she has a office, make the legs of all extra chairs a couple inches shorter than normal, and give her a slightly taller than normal desk with a chair she can adjust the height on. This should let her look people in the eye (or even look down at some.)

It doesn't necessarily have to be overbearing and bossy, just a big personality.

It could be love and nurturing in a way that has her age peers responding to her in a "Yes, mom" way.

There is an old saying: It's not the size of the dog in the fight that matters, it's the size of the fight in the dog.

It was a example.

Partly from rereading DVA, partly from a few real world examples. (Does the name Rickover ring a bell?)

Tiny for a guy. Was pretty much the guy behind the US Navy nuclear reactors. Also a real asshole. But he knew how to do his job, better than most. Probably wrong era for ya...

Yeah, I Googled him. I didn't dig far enough into his bio to see that he was on the small side.

Not that far wrong era for me, but I wasn't paying attention to such things yet. He died right around a year before I graduated from high school.

I thought Julia Williams in DVA as well. Likewise, Andi Shultz in GMW's The Far Side

This happens often enough that you'd think people would learn to stop using initialisms of story titles.

Since it's been mentioned as such in six threads in the past month (including this one), I'd have thought that any non-goldfish would know to make use of the forum search facility to find one of the threads where it's expanded.

Why would someone do that if they hadn't seen the prior threads and therefore didn't know it had been explained elsewhere. There will always be someone new around.

that assumes everyone is always using the same acronym for the same thing, and it also assumes the person saw and read the earlier post. neither assumption is safe to use.

I remember about 30 years ago seeing a 7'6" man standing next to a woman that was under 5' tall. Very large contrast in height.

Two things we need to know to start with are:

1. What actions and activities do you want her doing while looking larger than she is?

2. Why does she need to seem larger than she is?

Both of these, especially point 1, affect on what can be done to enhance appearance. High heels aren't much good for running, as an example.

Spike heels aren't good for running, I'm not so sure that would apply to a wedge heel. You can get women's sneakers with wedge heels.

And there are many instances of TV crime dramas where an older female forensic scientist/pathologist wearing high heels, manages to chase and catch a fit, athletic young male.

One of those characters was played by Dana Delany, whose character wore such ridiculously tall heels that she had to be shorter than Tom Cruise. IIRC she was never shown walking down stairs in them. They'd show her at the top then cut to showing her at the bottom.

She probably couldn't walk very far in them without falling down. That wouldn't look good on the screen.

That would only happen on TV and film, won't happen in real life. I know a lot of female cops and their biggest complaint is how they have to wear armour-plated bras to keep their tits out of the way when running or dealing with troublesome prisoners.

Well, that's usually because those guys are written to have a interest in cougars.

B) Likely popular for the comedy value.

Many different cities in the Netherlands have yearly events. Just enter "high heels race" in DuckDuckGo and click "images" for an instant overview.
Don't be surprised to see males on high heels participating too :D

B) Likely popular for the comedy value.

Depends on which specific event but some definitely are.

Look? As in descriptions of physical actions? Or, are you talking about interactions with other characters that focus attention on her? I've got a character that's under five feet. In one scene, she curls her feet under her in a chair, something she will only do because the man she is talking to (her boss) has already shown that he sees and respects her strengths and plans to use them. Without that, she would never have done something that would emphasize her small size.

Remus2 ๐Ÿšซ

Doesn't matter if it's a person, animal, book, painting, sound, or whatever you choose. Contrast is an integral part of perception. Without contrast, there is no perception.

In this case, the character should not change, but rather the contrasting elements that allow the perception of the character.

Example of contrast. Look for the 'O' in the field of 'Q's.

Conversely, look for the Q in the field of 'O's.

Which is easier to make out? Q in the second field or O in the first?

In Robert Heinlein's "Number of the Beast", he has a physically tiny woman named "Sharpy" Real name Hilda, that tends to take over any situation by the force of her personality. She even manages to get Lazarus Long to toe the line.

Clothing can make her look bigger. Tops with shoulder pads, poodle skirts, winter clothing, heavy boots. Clothing with vertical stripes.

(Also never stand next to anyone but people her height!)
