Safari browser

Lazeez recently said something like "That's what I get for testing with Safari" when people not using Safari had issues with the Beta login system he hadn't experienced.

The state of Arizona says that if you use Safari as your browser their site might not work right, like paying your taxes. I have to use Chrome on their site.

When I published my last 3 or 4 novels on Amazon, the Look Inside was a formatting mess. The Amazon Tech Support person always said it looked good on their end, but when they got the Look Inside team involved they corrected the formatting. I republished an old novel and the formatting is screwed up in Look Inside (I'm waiting on a call from their Tech Support). For the hell of it, I tried it with Chrome. It was formatted perfectly. So Amazon's Look Inside has a problem with Safari.

I recently had a problem with the Fidelity Investments site that their Customer Service couldn't help me with, but their Tech Support person said they've had problems with Safari and their site.

What's with Safari? Is it that much different than the other browsers?

Yes, it's Apple's. Apple doesn't get the heat for it that MS does (largely because of the Apple monoculture), but they ignore and/or extend published standards just as much MS.

The biggest difference with Safari, is that it doesn't support Flash standards, which most other sites continue to support. That generally won't affect how Amazon sites play on other sites, but ... Plus, they've recently yanked the rug from under most advertisers. It's a boon for those fed up with nonsense 'targeted' ads, but Amazon had officially declared war with Apple over it!

I generally view my results on both Safari and Firefox, though I'm sure that Chrome is a completely different beast, too.

In my experience, I sum up the design philosophies as such:
Firefox - let users view the web the way they want it to look
Chrome - show users the web the way web developers intend it
Safari/M$ - try to make everyone use this browser because otherwise sites designed for it will break any other one

I got an email from Amazon even though I asked to be called. They asked for screenshots. I sent them one for the Look Inside with Safari and one with Chrome. Now this is only what fit on the screen (the cover page and a bit of Chapter 1) and I listed the problems as:

1. "a novel" and the copyright info is not centered.

2. what comes after the copyright is centered but shouldn't be.

3. "acknowledgements" should be bold.

4. what's after the acknowledgments should be centered but it's not.

5. "Books by S.W. Blayde" should be centered but it is not.

6. what comes after that is all messed up. All the book titles should have the same left indent. The parts with the ASIN should not be blue or underlined.

7. The first paragraph after "Chapter 1" should not be bold. And it should not be centered. It should be left justified with no first paragraph indent.

I still find it hard to believe their software would screw up displaying on Safari that much. And that wasn't even the novel; just the cover page.
