Good reads has some of my stories

I read a lot about people stealing stories from here and selling them, but this is the first time anyone bothered to steal mine, and they posted them for free too.

What annoyed me was that they are openly posted for anyone to download without regard to age verification etc. Some of them have content really not appropriate for kids.

Now, should I be offended that no one wanted to sell my stuff or happy that someone finally stole my stuff? I wasn't sure which way to go here! (Kidding!)

and when you complain about it they'll do nothing. It is supposed to be a story recommendation site only. I did have an account there at one time so I could control the entries on my stories, but they killed it for some reason and refused to tell me why they killed my access to the account.

I did have an account there

I have an account there. Michael J. Sullivan, the successful Fantasy author I know on wattpad (although he hasn't been there in ages) said it's a must for an author to be on Goodreads.

I don't know how to use it as an author. I use it for published novels I read and review there.

I found several of my books listed on it so I opened an account and took over ownership of my books then posted the new books as I published them so I had them on there. After a couple of years Goodreads simply cancelled my access with I note I'd violated there terms but never answered when I asked how I'd violated their terms because everything I'd done was within the published terms. I can only think I upset one of their moderators in some way that I don't know of.

Basically, before Amazon bought it and turned it into yet another way to sell Amazon books, it was mainly a site where authors could list their books and everyone could comment on and recommend books they loved (or hated, but that's almost unknown there).

Reluctant Sir, I'd write them, reporting a copyright infringement, listing where and when YOU posted the story, as well as listing the sexual nature of the story. They're pretty good about respecting copyright claims, though just like Amazon, it'll generally take them a couple of weeks to take anything down, no matter how well documented it is.

The other approach, is to try to connect to the supposed author, if they have an account there. But chances are, since the site is not a distribution site, the option to download the book is merely a link to the actual site illegally offering the story. In that case, you'd want to file an official Take-Down notice with that site.

That's how I use it. There's also an author's blog.

I just checked, and all the books I'd posted there are still there, despite them saying they closed my account and deleted everything back in early 2019.

That's what I don't understand. There aren't books on Goodreads. The books are on Amazon. Goodreads is a recommendation site and just points to the books on Amazon.

At least that's my understanding. As I said, I don't know how to use Goodreads as an author. I do add my books under my author profile and sometimes write a blog, but that's it.

When Amazon purchased the site, they introduced a 'Recommended' books feature, which authors/publishers could pay to be on, where they'd also sell the books directly. Due to the pricing, it's mainly an option for publishers, who can dump a bunch of books in one go, rather than an author uploading a single book at a time.

This is why I put most of my stories on Amazon. It wasn't to sell them, it was to get Amazon to bring down the hammer if anyone published them elsewhere.

That won't work because Amazon owns Goodreads and many of the sites where the story thieves post the stolen stories.

No, it's likely that the thief published the story via Amazon, so filing a copyright violation notice (listing the actual book, not 'Goodreads is offering my book') will get them to review the case (including offering the violator a chance to refute your accusation).
