In an interview, Jim Grant said that he wanted to portray 6' 5" Jack Reacher as a good version of the biblical character Goliath. Unfortunately the casting director was dyslexic and selected 5' 6" Thomas Mapother III.

Best thing ever done. I saw the two Jack Reacher movies before reading a Jack Reacher novel. I love Tom Cruise's portrayal of Reacher. In fact, it inspired me to write my Lincoln Steele series.
When I read the novel, I hated the Reacher character. Size had nothing to do with it.
Lee Child made Reacher 6'5" and (I think) 240 pounds because he didn't want Reacher to lose a fight. In Cruise's Reacher, it was more skill than brute force. And Lee Child's version was mean and a bully (at least in the novel I read—"Echo Burning").
