Done With Distributing Books to Sites like SW, Lulu and D2D

Vincent Berg ๐Ÿšซ

Though I've long cheered about the great job that Direct2Digital does in rendering eBooks (i.e. not corrupting the books and not deleting included images), my latest examination of my D2D numbers has completely changed my mind.

While distributed sales have Never been that been of a factor in my overall sales, I always saw it as a way of gaining a couple new readers.

I'd been noticing a decrease in SW's distributed sales, years ago, and Amazon long had a problem with readers returning books they're spent a month reading for a full refund. However, after generating $42 in sales in 2018, my 2019 sales only amounted to $4. Out of 15 sales (5 of which were well under $1 to 'share' sites and libraries where you get paid pennies on the dollar), virtually ALL were returned by readers. Mind you, these are the exact SAME books which were selling earlier, so it's not a single 'unsuccessful' book. Rather, it's readers actively cheating the authors out of their honest pay.

While Apple faced the same problem a couple years ago, where returns were becoming a chronic problem, they resolved it by 'scoring' customers. Any Amazon customer who routinely returned items or negatively reviewed ALL their purchases were either severely limited, or banned outright. That seems to have resolved the issue, as I haven't noticed the problem continuing on Amazon lately. D2D, however, it simply letting it run rampant.

So, giving the diminishing returns on a measly 25% (30% - assorted fees), I'm going to cease distributing my books to 3rd party outlets. While it worked to expose me to new authors for a while, it's no longer beneficial to continue wasting time with it.

Amazon has 85% market share for ebooks. Of course it also depends on genre. Romance does great; Young Adult not so good.

Amazon has a liberal return policy, but I've only had a few novels returned and none in the recent past (I don't think any in 2019).

Authors on wattpad praise D2D. Those who go wide, anyway (not being exclusive to Amazon). But I have no experience with them since all my novels are exclusive to Amazon.

As I'm writing my WIP, I'm keeping Bookapy in mind.

Speaking of which, let this be a warning to Lazeez as he begins distributing his Bookapy books to other publishers. Chances are, without any controls in how 3rd-party retailers process claims, most of his sales will be returned, destroying any planned additional funding for either authors or Bookapy. :(

As did I, as the production values, website design, tools and output quality are exceptional, and my initial sales were ... promising, but once again, this year was a complete wash, as nearly every single purchase was returned for a complete refund.

If people want to read my stories for free, they can join SOL like everyone else and wait their turn.

I tried D2D for a few months and then deleted most of my books and left only the freebies as I want as wide a distribution of them as I can get. As they're free it matters not what site or service they go through.

My two real sales sources are still Lulu and now Bookapy. On Lulu the freebies and they're also on Bookapy. The pay for e-books are via Lulu and Bookapy.

I've never liked or trusted Amazon and their associated sites, so I've never used them.

Alas, some things work on Patreon, and some just don't. I tried Patreon, as 'yet another outlet' years ago, when it was first started, and the sales just never did anything. I offered all KINDS of rewards, free reads, free books, listing people in books, etc., but hardly any interest.

I'll try anything, but I won't continue chasing after dead ends.
