I'd be careful of imitating someone else's style, which is one reason why I don't read the same genre as I'm currently writing, but generally, it shouldn't screw up your basic writing. Though I have sometimes implemented a small style change (basically only one at a time) midway through a book, which may cause it to stand out somewhat. But in that case, you just need to go back and enforce it as a new standard, so the entire book is consistent.
The biggest danger is imitating other's writing, rather than improving your basic writing skill. If you begin showing more than your telling later on in your book, it'll be seen as a sign of your personal growth, rather than an aberration. For longer, ongoing stories, that's a basic assumption, that you grow as you progress.

Not a writing guide like some of the others, but something that might be useful. There's been a fair bit of recent work in neurology, and how the brain processes ideas. It was long known that Broca's Area of the brain is where ideas get generated. Originally, they were thought to be words.
It turns out, however, that there are at least three major pathways out of that area: speech, writing, and song. One striking example was Gabby Giffords' rehabilitation after her brain injury. Her speech was badly damaged, but therapists substituted singing political speech, which eventually reinforced her speech.
For quite a while, I've further subdivided the writing path when I have writer's block. While I usually type, I find that if I go to other modes of writing, such as different kinds of pens or pencils, and changing paper, I may be able to break loose.
