Files that travel through daylight savings time

StarFleet Carl ๐Ÿšซ

Just noticed something that's pretty irrelevant, but from a security perspective, I thought was odd.

When I'm writing, I save my rough copy on a USB stick. That way I can easily transport it for editing on whatever computer I happen to be on. Typically every day or two, I copy the files that I have changed or edited from the USB to my actual computer HDD (which also automatically makes a back-up on my server HDD as well). I just noticed tonight that the date modified time stamp on all files on my HDD has been changed to reflect DST.

For example, a file that on my USB says was last modified on 11/01/19 at 10:15 pm shows it was modified on 11/01/19 at 9:15 pm. I know your computer automatically adjusts for DST - I didn't know it would do so for all SAVED files, because now the majority of my USB files show, literally, an hour difference in the time modified.

Just a curiosity, but one that has me going, why would it change the time modified like that?

Because the timestamp is actually stored in UTC and your system adjusts for time zone, including daylight savings time, on the fly for display purposes.

on the fly

I recall an apocryphal tale of the first F22 fighter deployment to Japan. When the planes crossed the international date line their onboard navigation systems crashed. They followed their tanker home using Mk 1 eyeballs.
True or not, I do not know.

It wouldn't be the first time Boeing screwed up the avionics (Lockheed airframe, Boeing avionics).

True. But it may not have been the date. According to the article, it was longitude, which went from W179.99 to E180.

Thanks. Proof that there are always problems with circular logic.

End of the world types always think the world is going to end at midnight on their day of reckoning.*

Does this mean the world disintegrates progressively over 24 hours? Is a failure by Ernest to comment or post a story the literary canary in a coal mine?

Do we need to take up a collection to ensure he posts every 24 hours as proof of the continuing existence of the Counter Weight Continent?

Does the Restaurant at the End of The Universe have a home delivery service for local End of the Worlds?

*They only need to be right once to be able to feel that wonderful smug feeling. Which is probably why the date gets reset every time.

If he fails to post, and the moon is incredibly bright over North America, then the Inconstant Moon has struck. (Thank you, Larry Niven.)

Actually, since that story was written in 1971, with the advances in technology that we've had since then, I don't think we could HAVE that story now. I think at no time in recorded history has a span of less than 40 years been so pivotal in changing most of mankind.

There were a lot of scientific advances during World War 2. The technology, though, has now advanced SINCE then at an ever increasing rate.

And I'm talking about the effect on the entire globe, not just the countries that basically were involved in the war. We now can have someone sitting in a room in Nebraska advise someone working in a field in Zimbabwe on how to do something.

Inconstant Moon

A great story, I was going to pitch it, then I thought my post would become over long. Like most of them.

One of the authors on Lit. has a much darker version, with the world ending over a period of weeks as the relentless temperature rise kills all life, including the MC, his pregnant wife and the aging neighbors. Very well done and probably more realistic. I can't remember the author or the title.
A Carrington event would end the world as we know it. No internet!

Does the Restaurant at the End of The Universe have a home delivery service for local End of the Worlds?

Nope.

They did when they first opened, but due to certain people traversing the space time continuum so as to place their order after the due delivery time thus gaining free pizza... Well, they spoilt it for everyone.

Good news;

They do offer take-out service though, unless you are spending a year dead* for tax reasons, of course.

Ahhh... not necessarily so. The pols are considering enhancements to the Death Tax, wherein you're required to file an estimate form of the amount due prior to expiration. Failure to file may result in a delay.

@graybyrd

Some countries have Provisional Tax, where they demand the serfs pay at least part of their estimated next years tax bill in advance.
Imagine provisional death duties. Computer generated letters stating that acturial tables show a better than 50% chance of death in the next year, so please start liquidating your estate now to ensure the maximum return to the Revenue.

Ayep, and then they're employed as Tax Office Staff and in other government clerical jobs.

Maybe in 'other government clerical jobs' but NOT as tax office staff.

Why?

As proof I submit the following;

A tax officer asked a priest what happens to the broken communion wafers?
We save them up and when the box is full the supplier sends us a box of fresh ones.

A tax officer asked a reverend what happens to the candle stubs?
We save them up and when the box is full the supplier sends us a box of new candles.

A tax officer asked what happens to the skin after the bris ?
We save them up and when the box is full we send them to the tax office and they send us a complete prick...

I'm often sending files back in time. Considering the time difference between Australia and the USA, every time I upload a file to Lulu or SoL just after I save the latest version the time stamp on the file is many hours ahead of SoL and Lulu. In the past that has caused some issues with the Lulu file validator program as it didn't like taking files from the future.
