keet

awnlee jawking ๐Ÿšซ

My tabloid du jour has a daily 'guess the meaning', where an obscure word is listed along with three possible meanings and the user is supposed to guess the right one.

keet (circa 1855)

a) common sense
b) ingenuous mockery
c) offspring of a guinea fowl

Keet is a Dutch word that translates to shed or shack :)
ETA: In English it's a young guinea fowl

Obviously. Sort of like parakeet.

Actually many people did but those were all people that deserved to see the gentleman side of me ;)
No one ever taught you the difference between being a gentleman and acting gentlemanly?

joyR ๐Ÿšซ

@karactr

And, whoever told you that you were a gentleman?

It matters not if he is or isn't a gentleman.

He stated that shooting at him wasn't gentlemanly. Which is to suggest that whomsoever did shoot at him was no gentleman. It is the shooter, not the target who is or isn't a gentleman.

Obviously anyone who isn't English is a fair target. But there are considerations in terms of exactly how deserving of being shot a given nationality is, not to mention those who are 'not worth a bullet'.

:)

NB

That said, never forget that the Dutch who felt so oppressed by their own countrymen that they set sail for South Africa, founded the Orange Free State, and still feeling oppressed, founded apartheid. So if you do shoot one, better make sure you don't miss.....

Shot means good in South African colored slang. Tells you what they think of their social betters.

Don't forget it was the British who perfected the concentration camp for killing Dutch women and children. There is a very horrible irony in the fact that Lord Rothschild sent every Boer war soldier a christmas hamper for securing the gold & diamond mines. 40 years later the techniques learned were used against his own people.

Back to language. You can take the Boer out of SA but you can't take Africa out of the Boer. They have the term Soutpiel (salt penis) for expats. One foot in Africa, the other in England, America or Australia and their penis hanging in the ocean.

You're right, it's a sign of being nouveau riche.

Faster than a rolling O, stronger than a silent e. Able to leap a capital T in a single bound, it's Letter Man!

Gentlemen shoot peasants and grouse

Why would a gentleman grouse about shooting peasants? :P

Radagast ๐Ÿšซ

@awnlee jawking

Gentlemen don't shoot peasants. They only shoot game and shoot in gamin.
Shooting vermin is left to the game keepers such as the police and militia.

A friend had a budgerigar with two broken legs.
Rather than put it down, it was treated well, living on a piece of sheep skin on a desk with low pots of water and seed within reach.
it would fly around visitors heads until they held their hands up flat in front of their faces, where he would crash land and lecture them at length about kids these days and the menace of cats before taking off and crashing on his sheepskin for a nap.
He was a para-keet.

The first time I had anal sex was with a tiny girlfriend in college. Not her first time she claimed, but I'm not sure I believe by how much we underapplied lubricant. She was red-faced with her eyes shut closed. The first thing she said might've been "Keet!" Or her voicebox had become an impromptu train whistle.

In that context, I believe she was using this definition:

b) ingenuous mockery

But we've fallen out of contact a decade ago. I can't ask her to be certain.

I may be wrong, but from dealings with Dutch colleagues while working on a project together, 'keet', when spoken by a Dutch native, may well sound like 'kate' to English-speaking ears.

No, not Kate. I was talking about the girl before the girl before Kate. Very much not Dutch. Mild East Coast Canadian accent. Very very watered down Newfie.
