Watch out for copyright theft

Here is a suggestion that I tell all authors to do on occasion. Take one of your stories, and do a google search for one of the first sentences with quotation marks. On at least 3 occasions I have found one of my stories for sale this way, first on Amazon and more recently on Barnes & Noble.

I suggest everybody look through the works by "Jessie Angel", as well as a publisher listed as "Zhanghiwa Gakyoyao, Ltd.".

While I am irritated that they stole my work and are selling it on a commercial site, I guess I am also flattered that of the 40 or so stories they appear to have done this to, mine is the highest priced one they are offering.

And in addition, this was actually the first time I found it under the original title. The first time it had been renamed "A Girl Named Tamiko", and the second time called "Hot Saki Sue".

Take down notice time, though I'm unsure how receptive the Chinese are to U.S. Copyright requests, as they've routinely ignored copyright entirely for many decades (dating back to the old Chinese bootleg Betamax tapes). Chances are, though, the site may not even be Chinese, but simply a Chinese speaking site parked somewhere with few bothersome regulations (like a small island somewhere).

@Mushroom

I no longer post work for any form of publishing due to that. I have three materials patents in contention at the moment which is a significant pain in the ass without adding trying to defend a copyright.

Well joy of joy, I have found my story "Okinawa" once again for sale. But this time at Barnes & Noble. This must be the 5th time I have found this story being sold. I just wish I was the one making the money and not somebody else.

I suggest any others look through the seller, and make sure they are not selling anything others in here have written.

It's fucking pathetic when people simply steal the work of others, then try to make money off of it. I bet every single book this person has for sale is stolen.

The other books there by "Jessie Angel" are:
- Love for Sale, both in English and translated into German
- My Lover
- Two for One
- Queen Bee Sora
This list is a lot shorter than others in the past.

I suspect that it was once longer, but as others discovered the theft they got removed one by one.

But Queen Bee Sora is also an old one taken from ASSTR. I bet that is all they did, go through there and grab as much as they could and simply started to sell them.

And I saw it is the same one as last time. So I can only imagine B&N did not honor my request to remove it, or they added it back again.

Next time, submit the publishing dates of your stories, along with the outlets (so they can document it) and then demand they transfer the payments they already paid out for it, rather than merely pocketing the whole thing in their own pockets. If they have to pay for the theft themselves, rather than continuing to profit from it, they won't be as quick to sweep it under the rug.

Which I have done. Thankfully, I was able to go back to 2001 when I had reposted it on ASSM Usenet group. But I could not trace back to my original postings, as the ASSTR site has become pretty much useless in searching anymore.

To search for - as an example - Trouble with Tribbles on AssTr, use the following search string:

site:www.asstr.org "Trouble with Tribbles"

That way you have a chance of finding what you are looking for.
I have tested this with Google and with DuckDuckGo - "safe settings" permitting (if they are even used on a site-search), no idea about other search engines.

The problem is, that barely works on ASSTR anymore. This is because that site is pretty much dead, and the archives are largely gone for one reason or another.

I know for a fact the first stories I posted in the ASSM Usenet group was in 1996. And I used to use those earliest postings when throwing out DCMA complaints in the past. But now, the oldest result is from 2001. Everything from around 1995-2000 seems to be gone.

Heck, my own author's section (from 1997-2000) is no longer in the search, I had to go back and look at the directory usage reports I used to get years ago to even find my page there.

Yes, I know about using qualifiers like site:. But when the site itself is largely broken and huge parts of the archive appear to be gone that is worthless.

Out of curiosity, what prompted you to look at Barnes & Noble?

Likely a google search led him there, as mentioned in the OP

I was not.

Here is the thing, a lot of thieves are amazingly lazy. And they will throw up several paragraphs of a story as a teaser or hook to get people interested in buying the story.

I simply went into google and entered the first lines of my story in quotes.

"It was late Saturday evening. I was walking in Okinawa City, Japan. I had been here for just over a year, and loved being here. My normal routine was to get into my car (a piece of shit '82 Toyota) and drive down here."

And the number 1 result was Barnes and Noble. Also Kristen, and a few clones of the Kristen site. Followed by some that have thrown this into hidden text as a way to get people to load the page. I have been seeing that for over 20 years now.

Seriously not trying to insult - more like, sigh.

Content in the stories I've written are so terrifying to corporations, none would sell them. Also, I suck at editing my work. (I do try)

Save your IP by writing worse! (sigh)
