How long should porn heroes be?

Its Son day, I am a son, its my day, so I will ask the elephant in the living room question, how long should your porn story hero's cock be? There is a tradition, at least in porn films, that John Holmes is average size. Sometimes length is ignored, although most heroes are at least six feet tall, or maybe less when 12 years old but they grow in coming of age stories.

Does it add anything to the story to have longer or wider for your hero? Do you feel some obligation to mention it in your stories? If not, why not? Of course the 14 incher big around as your arm is probably going to throw some readers out past their suspension of disbelief limits, but if you do mention it, what is "normal" for a SOL story?

Incidentally I was reading a story yesterday where the virgin had a "Hyman." I guess it could say Hy to a man. That is another suspension of disbelief killer when its located deeper than reasonable. Some spelling errors are stranger than others.

Stories where the guy has some unrealistic length do nothing for me (turnoff, actually)... and unrealistic is anything resembling John Holmes or Ron Jeremy's length. Those guys were freaks of nature. I would have thought that, excluding sadism and deliberate injury to the partner / victim then "oversize" is limiting the author's future choices. Why not use an adjective which allows the reader to use his / her imagination such as marvellous, majestic, magnificent, majesterial, ......? Even incredible or unbelievable might do

Define believable. The recorded record for human penis length is 13.5 inches erect.

On the other hand, the average is around 6 inches.

A hero with a penis in the 9-11 inch range shouldn't be all that unbelievable unless he has half a dozen or more friends all equally large.

Normally I'd agree, but if you're writing a sex story there's nothing wrong with pressing the right buttons to attract reader interest. At the risk of sounding cynical, there's a huge disconnect between sex stories and real life.

It all depends on how you go about it. Sure, it detracts from the flow if you are just quoting it off in a narrative description. On the other hand it could be put into the story in a non-disruptive ways.

For example:

A female character, having her measurements taken at a dress shop for fitting.

Or a male character guessing at a female character's cup size and being clear in the narrative that it is just a guess by the male character. Or the male character looking at the label on her bra after the female character takes it off.

For a male character's cock size, having a female character feeling his cock through his pants and making a guess in her head as to the length.

I do use cup size myself, but as for cocks I pretty much stick to calling them average size or large. Plenty of average women have tits of all sizes (though the ones in porn mostly have implants), and everybody notices them. Whereas the huge cocks you usually see in porn are at the extreme side of the bell curve.

As much as women agree or deny that cock size matters, they don't really know what they are getting until clothes are coming off and they are committed to fucking. I'm sure most guys are right around average size and get by just fine.

I agree. Cocks seem to stick pretty close to the average with a few exceptions, while breast sizes vary widely (even with a single woman over time), so there's a much greater degree of variance. I suspect, with no evidential proof, that there's a wider discrepancy with lean and width than there is in actual length. But then, I'll have to ask someone with more experience with a variety of cocks!

The article listed no information concerning the distribution curve (a standard statistical measurement in any reasonable study). We need to read the individual studies to come to any conclusion about typical male variation.

It all has to do with your aim. If you're writing fantasy, then dicks can be as long as you're little heart (or little head) desires. However, if you want a modicum of reality to your stories (i.e. your hero isn't a sexual superhero), then you'll probably want to tone it down.

As others have said, many of us saw the older films and thought, "Yeah, sure!". There are plenty of newer porn films with 'average' sized leading men (or at least only 6 to 8 inches, rather than 12 to 16!). Few feature anyone below six inches, however.
