Feel free to change the names, or add aspects of someone else's personality, or take your stories where yours never did. That's part of writing.
As far as criticism, mostly that's over approach or disagreements over intent, rather than quality. We fight when we think someone's being an ass, and the others attack us for making stupid points, not for raising the issue in the first place.
In the end, we all write the types of stories that interest us, and learn as we go along. If you need advice, simply ask. We're a helpful bunch, even though we do spend and inordinate amount of time fighting over minor and relatively unimportant issues.
There are some really good editors and beta readers on this site. Look in the authors section and look for editors. They can help you a long way in making a so-so story pop and be read a whole lot better.
