Queueing chapters

Capt. Zapp ๐Ÿšซ

When uploading new chapters for later posting, do you put in the date you want the chapter to post or the previous day? Just wondering because I have a chapter in the queue for today and it hasn't shown up yet.

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

@Capt. Zapp

Delayed postings show up in our processing queue at 8:00pm EST of the chosen day.

You list the day you want it to post, but you have to ensure the little button above the date you enter is set, otherwise it'll ignore the date you entered. However, in that case, it'll post immediately, not post later than expected.

That said, I typically stay up late on the nights I post. If I post at midnight, or even 12:20 a.m., the story will post the day before. If I queue it to post the next day, it'll often show up mid-afternoon, just as if I woke up at 8:00 a.m. (apparently when Lazeez and company start working) and posted right away. However, if I post after 12:30 a.m. the morning I want the story to appear, it'll be the first items in the queue and will appear shortly after 8. (Apparently, the items queued only get processed when the SOL admins start work, so they get added to the back of the processing list, rather than being added to the list when they're first queued.)

In short, if you want it to show up bright and early, stay up late. If you'd rather enjoy your sleep, then deal with late deliveries.

Ernest typically queues his entire story so it'll post every other day, a chapter at a time. I, on the other hand, like to preform a final review the day before posting, and I frequently end up making quite a few changes, even after extensive reviews and changes by my editors (mostly clarifying sentences, simplifying language or switching common phrases). Posting late is essentially the only way I can post the changes and get it to my readers when they expect it (though most don't read it until later in the afternoon anyway, so make of my advice what you will).

In short, I don't have a clue why your story hasn't posted yet. :(

OK, despite sounding like I know what I'm talking about, I've got a few queuing questions of my own.

I queued a couple chapters a couple days ago, but forgot one (due to my odd-ball file numbering system). When I went to add it to the queue, my earlier entries are no longer listed (I'd planned to either modify the submission, or cancel it and start again). Instead, I ended up leaving a VERY complicated series of instructions for the Admins, which I repeated three times since I'm posting the three different sites.

Questions:

1) What happens to queued entries after a day. Are they merely hidden from site? I notice one posted for this Saturday is still queued, while the one for tomorrow isn't.

2) Is it possible to cancel a non-queued queued story? (I'm assuming not, but I just want to clarify.)

3) If there are multiple queued submissions (multiple submissions of different chapters for the same day), how are the submissions processed? Sequentially, chapter order?

4) IF submitting a queue more than a day in advance removes it from the visible queue, and IF that means it's already been processed by the Admins, does that then mean the submission will appear sooner on the posting date (i.e. less day-of processing by the Admins.)?

I don't mean to be a pest here, but I'm confusing myself trying to change things on the fly (which is why I don't like queuing stories in the first place, you can change things at the last minute).

All submissions should be listed for you in the wizard until they are processed. They will be listed under the delayed section. Again, until they're actually processed by me or Vixen, they should remain listed in the wizard. If that's not the case let me know and I'll seek the bug that may be lurking somewhere in the submission listing code.

2) Is it possible to cancel a non-queued queued story? (I'm assuming not, but I just want to clarify.)

Yes. Unless it's locked by a moderator or already posted, you should be able to cancel it.

3) If there are multiple queued submissions (multiple submissions of different chapters for the same day), how are the submissions processed? Sequentially, chapter order?

Delayed submissions show up in the moderator queue ready for processing at 8:00pm EST or EDT in the summer. At 8:00pm we start seeing them and we'll process them all at the same time.

4) IF submitting a queue more than a day in advance removes it from the visible queue, and IF that means it's already been processed by the Admins, does that then mean the submission will appear sooner on the posting date (i.e. less day-of processing by the Admins.)?

The admins don't see it before 8pm on the queued day so we can't process it. It should remain listed until then. The only submission that can get processed and not appear on the site immediately are contest entries. Anything else shows up immediately.

I send you an official complaint, as the submitted posting has vanished from site.

Sorry, but my experiences don't align with your ideals. I typically post at 12:30 the morning BEFORE a chapter posts, because if I queue it, the chapter generally won't appear until after noon (typically around 2 p.m., the same time it does if I forget and post it at 8 a.m. However, when I submit it once you all leave the office (sic.), the story appears first thing in the morning. I'm guessing there's a submission order. Since I post after you finish processing submissions the night before, my normal postings are always the first in line. However, when a submission is queued, it only 'shows up' on your end after multiple submissions have been submitted (mostly by authors in other time zones like Australia or Europe).

In other words the chapters I upload in advance for posting on Wednesdays don't get processed until 8:00pm ET on Wednesday. So if I want it to appear early on Wednesday, I should set it for Tuesday?

If you set it for Tuesday, it'll post on Tuesday. It WILL be available on Wednesday, but it won't necessarily be visible as long. Books go off the "Recent Updates" or "New Stories" list after 2 days, barring a lot of posts, so you may not catch all your readers, especially the weekend crowd who only check stories on Saturdays or Sundays. Also, if you post on Tuesday, by the time Wednesday rolls around, the story may no longer be visible on the primary daily lists.
