What are you Listening to? Looking for Recommendations

Marc Nobbs ๐Ÿšซ

I'm guessing that like a lot of others, I like to listen to music as I write/edit. Headphones on. World around me shut out. Writer mode activated.

Now, I'm 51, so for most of my life, this has meant putting on a CD. Then we started downloading tracks. Now, my two kids (20 & 14) would die if I cancelled our family spotify subs. They'd lynch me, I think.

And I'm just as bad. But the nature of Spotify means you tend to listen to 'tracks' rather than 'albums', by which I mean a collection on songs released together as whole and intended to be listened to in the order determined by the artist. My Wrapped for last year (aside from giving me a 'listening age' of 75, which I'm still bitter about) showed my 'most listened to album' was Taylor Swift's new one, which I listened to for a grand total of 35 mins - meaning not even all the way through once.

So this year, I've resolved to listen to more albums, as albums are intended to be listened to. I've got a list of classics from my youth (feels wrong to refer to "What's the Story (Morning Glory)" as a classic, but stil...).

In the past month I've been enjoying Luke Combs "The Way I Am", and I had a very pleasant stroll around park last weekend listening to Ella Langley's "Dandelion".

So... I'm looking for recommendations for new and classic albums that are worth my attention. Anything genre, any time period.

Just for reference, so you can see the sort of music I enjoy, here's the link to my automatically updated playlists which list my most listened to tracks for the past 4 weeks, 6 months and 1 year.

So, which albums should I give some attention to the next time I sit down to edit.

Same age as you. Recently joined the Spotify thing, mainly because my wife got us a family sub. Before that, it was mainly CDs or, later, rips of my CDs in iTunes.
My go-to is generally classic rock during the day. I'll listen to their "suggested" playlists for classic rock and 80's rock. Also go for the heavier metal, especially 80's hair bands and newer, harder music (metal core, some death core - oldest stepson was in a metal core band so turned me on to it) - especially when out on the motorcycle for a longer ride to keep me pumped. Jazz tracks later in the evening around bedtime to mellow out, or get us in the mood.
Found that Spotify had Moody Blues albums on it, so did a dive through their music recently and thoroughly enjoyed.

Fantastic music that is always on my playlists.

My musical tastes are eclectic โ€” from ABBA to Zappa โ€” and include Swedish, German, Japanese, Indian, and Thai music. My main listening is 1960-1985 in just about any genre โ€” pop, rock, folk, country, metal, punk, &c.

Most of what I listen to is also from that era, by an artist or group who became famous in that era, or at the very least sounds like songs I enjoy from that era.

Right now? The Turn of a Friendly Card by the Alan Parsons Project (for the young; Alan Parsons was the sound engineer for Dark Side of the Moon, and parlayed that into a series of albums with ensemble lineups. If you don't know Dark Side of the Moon, then listen to it!)

I listen a lot to Yes, ELP, Queen, Camel, Dire Straits and the late Jon Hiseman's band Colosseum.

Lots of other small stuff.

I need absolute silence while writing and especially editing. I hear a gas leaf blower outside and I'm done editing.

I'm the exact opposite. I hate silence - I get trapped in my own head.

I'm old school and eclectic. I use vinyl, CD's and an occasional cassette tape while reading. Doors, Tijuana Brass, Mannheim Steamroller, Transiberian Orchestra, Jerry Reed, Ray Stevens, & Jerry Clower to name a few. Sometimes I even put on some country or classical.

Another Herb Alpert fan! I can't believe I left jazz and blues off my list!

Most of my TJB collection was purchased during the 60's while I was in HS & college. They were well cared for and still sound great.

Kinda tough to have my original, which was on 8-track tape purchased around 1969 and played in our 27" Winnebago Chieftan motorhome from 1970-1972. Then came the oil crisis.

I do have some vinyl from that period, but that 8-track was the first.

classical

Trials have shown that to be the most effective, particularly older composers like Bach and Mozart. Some people mothers-to-be even play Mozart next to their baby bumps in the belief it will boost their babies' intelligence.
