And according to the Obituary on the BBC web site, the female owner was arrested and imprisoned as a Nazi spy at the start of WW II and that was what made him want to write a spy story when he was older - Hence the Ipcress File.
Myself, I preferred the Bernard Samson books.

Probably half the British aristocracy should've been arrested along with her. That was a really nicely done background context in the remains of the day.
