Danger of AI Reviews?

awnlee jawking 🚫

There's been a slurry of documentaries about AI on UK network TV recently, and I'm about halfway through watching them.

Because AIs are programmed to please, those who seek frequently seek AI approval can get trapped in a feedback loop, causing them to lose touch with reality and suffer a psychotic break. There were a couple of cases cited, one of which involved a man who broke into Buckingham Palace in an attempt to kill Her Majesty, which an AI had assured him was a good idea.

So if you submit a story to an AI for its opinion, beware of the possible consequences.

I would trust an AI reviewer about as far as I would trust my dog to give me a review about the music I listen to.

And feedback loop is exactly correct. Simply another variant of GIGO, Garbage In, Garbage Out.

If the AI has been taught to believe that all stories must include a murder, incest, a cute dog and a transgender hero, then those are things it is going to take into account in their review. And stories lacking one or more of those is going to be given lower marks than something that is actually complete crap but includes all of them.

That is simply how algorithms work. And such a review bot would likely love a story that involves a transgender dog who come in and kills somebody after they raped their daughter. After all, it checks off everything that it is looking for.

It's not so much GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out) as it is providing precisely what you're seeking. Thus, if you're looking for something to be suspicious about, it'll tell you to go out and destroy it. So it's insecure humans, searching for meaning from an automated, berserker AI. How could that ever be expected to turn out well?

You don't feed psychoses, you deal with them, relieving the pressure. If a psychologist did that, they'd be sitting on death row now. Yet if you wrote about it, not a single reader would buy/accept it.

Now, everyone is blaming 'weak souls', who are too insecure to withstand terrible suggestions, yet now there seems to be more and more people seeking just that.

Me, I like real villains and anti-heroes, who have their own specific agendas. A land where everyone blinding follows their phones every suggestion is just, utterly ridiculous. For crazy AI, I still prefer 2001, as then the insane AI was logical and made straightforward decisions.

Then again, talk about a perfect villain for our age, this is definitely it. Weak citizen who don't trust anyone, leaders who don't care about anyone but themselves, and no one leading, everyone taking whatever they can walk off with. In a way, we all deserve what we're getting. It's an ironic global tragedy at this point.
