Being a stupid person, I don't have a pointy head and the hood of my winter coat droops down over my eyes. I decided an extra layer of headwear, preferably with a brim, would be just the ticket to hold it up.

Wikipedia (spit!) says

A baseball cap is a type of soft hat with a rounded crown and a stiff bill projecting in front. The front of the hat typically displays a design or a logo (historically, usually only a sports team, namely a baseball team, or names of relevant companies, when used as a commercial marketing technique).

I don't want a logo but otherwise that should work. But in the cheapo clothing store I visited in the UK), far from being soft, the baseball caps were moulded out of hard plastic with a sort of canvas covering.

What's the standard - hard or soft?

A baseball cap is called a ball cap. Google "ball cap" and you'll see pictures.

It's not hard.

There's a batter's helmet that's hard (plastic), but that's not a ball cap. It's worn when you're at bat in case you get hit in the head with a pitch.

Alternatively, wear a clown wig.

I paid another visit to the cheapo store. I had to search to find the ball caps because they're a filler item and get moved regularly. On their new pegs, it was easier to see that only the front hemispheres were reinforced by moulded plastic. Which is logical really otherwise the rear strap would be pretty pointless. The cheapest were £3/$4.
