How important is a character you hate?

Pixy 🚫

I have a bit of a conundrum.

I had an idea that I was curious to see where it went. It was a short piece and I decided to write it down as an experiment/bit of practice/bit of fun. One specific character was a one line wonder.

She existed purely to move a specific plot point forward.

As a bit of a joke, and to give any potential readers a hint of her character, without actually spending any effort on her character, I called her 'Karen'. So far so good. Till I started to write the story. Turns out just calling her 'Karen' wasn't anywhere near enough. So I provided a few more details. And that's where the problems began.

I began to absolutely detest the character, and it was with great joy that I killed her off. But now I am having second thoughts. Should I actually keep her alive and use her as a foil for the main protagonist's happiness should I wish to continue the story further than an idea?

Also, I would just like to take a moment to apologise to all the non Karen 'Karen's' out there...

@Pixy

It seems your Karen is dictating your story for you. Set her free and let her follow her own path. The stronger the antagonist, the stronger the protagonist. If you feel your story is distractingly different from the rest of your work, publish it completely anonymously under a nom de plume eg pixyaskaren.
