Statistics

big-endian ๐Ÿšซ

Would someone point me to the right place or tell me how to do it?
I'm curious about annualized aggregate counts since SOLs start through today. Things like "Number of:" a) Stories Started, b) Stories Completed, c) same for Word Counts, d) New Authors, e) Continuing to contribute Authors, f) Paused Authors, Deleted Authors, each by year (that sort of thing). It seems to me like SOL has had a lot of growth at times. I wondering if actual data would support/refute my impression.

Try asking Lazeez Jiddan who founded SOL and has been it's webmaster since using the 'contact' button on the home page.

@AmigaClone

I suspect management wouldn't be happy at spending the amount of time it would take to collate those statistics even if it weren't commercially sensitive information.

Try asking Amazon for those statistics :-(

I would be intrigued as to the results. I'm no statistician, but after reading 'Freakonomics' (DTP) I have developed a curious interest in weird things.

Good Idea. Before I do, any idea what database SOL uses? In a past life, I wrote SQL aggregate queries for a data warehouse Oracle database. Based on what what we can see SOL's database is probably organized along OLTP lines.
So, if the schema and data isn't "commercially sensitive information" I'd be glad to help write and test the queries.

Of course they do, or accountants would be out of business. Besides, where to you think 'figuratively' came from? ;-)

My bathroom scales certainly do. The motherfucker....

Bathroom scales get so much hatred because they are misunderstood. People think they are there to tell us our weight but that just isn't true. I firmly believe that their true purpose is to give us a numerical percentage of the amount of awesome we are!

... then again it could also be a numerical valuation of the amount of BS we spout...hmm let me go ponder some more.

The Rolling Stones only had five stones of awesomeness - I'm sure your bathroom scales rate your awesomeness at least twice that :-)

well it can't be IQ... my scale doesn't show negative numbers :-)

Then how does it work for Australians (or whoever is antipodal to where you live)? :-)

No one is antipodal to where I live (south eastern Wisconsin. My antipode is in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Pretty much all of the US and Canada ends up antipodal to the Indian Ocean. If you are in Northern Canada or Alaska, you might end up in Antarctica.

That's a rather fascinating map. I can't help but wonder if it's deliberate that the majority of land masses are opposed by water or if it's just coincidence.

Since 71% of Earth is water, I guess it's more statistically probable than coincidence.

Apologies, your map doesn't support my elderly browser.

What about the Chagos Islands? Aren't they somewhere in the middle of the Indian Ocean?

How big are they, and where exactly? All of the US and Canada manage to miss Australia, Africa and Asia. If they are relatively close to one of those land masses, probably not. Even if centrally located in the Indian Ocean, the number of people whose antipode his those islands is likely to be quite small.

Edit: Checked the other direction, the antipodes map doesn't have all of the smaller islands, but as close as I could get using lat/long, it ends up in the Pacific ocean, west of the north end of South America.

@Dominions Son

I'm not sure where they are but I believe they're tiny. I know they're not close to Mauritius, the Chinese ally to whom the UK is in the process of gifting them, and they have a strategically vital US air base which necessitated ethnically cleansing the island hosting it of all Chagossians.

That's what I got too, using my dead tree atlas.

I would say that there is a degree of coincidence (with over 2/3 of the land surface being located in the northern hemisphere) which skews the statistical probability a bit.

BTW, here is another antipodal map.
