Does anyone know the qualification criteria for stories to be listed in the 'Top 50 Ongoing Serials, by Rating, in the Last 30 Days' list?
AJ
At the bottom of the list it says
A list of serial stories, sorted by rating (Stories must have 50 votes)
A list of serial stories, sorted by rating (Stories must have 50 votes)
Thank you, I missed that :-(

I wonder whether there would be enough interest for a 'Rising Stars' list: the top 50 serials in the last 30 days with enough votes to record a score but with 49 votes or less, so not eligible for the 'Recent Top Scores' list.
The volatility of fewer votes might kick up some ephemeral 8.0+ scores that readers who only read stories meeting that criterion could read while pretending to maintain their standards.
Rethink - perhaps 'Shooting Stars' would be better than 'Rising Stars'.

That sounds like an invitation for the 1-bombers (the people who automatically give a 1 score for a new story). One advantage of waiting until there's more votes is it mitigates the impact of those folks.

I'm sure such a list would have disadvantages as well as advantages. Whether it would attract 1-bombers is something we wouldn't know until it's been tried. My impression is that most 1-bombers target particular authors or stories covering subjects they don't like, and they can do that already from the 'New Stories' list.
AJ
Not opposed to trying it.
I don't understand the 1-bombers. 20 years ago (gawd, I'm old, and wow, SOL's been around a while), there was a clear pattern. As soon as a story crept into the top lists, it got hit by a bunch of bombers to force it back out of the list. They were "protecting" what they thought should be the top stories.
But these days, it seems a little more random and petty, which means I don't see the point. Yeah, there are subjects, stories, and authors I don't like, but that just means I don't read them.
Unfortunately, the bombers are a fact of life here. Maybe your list idea won't draw them any more than other new stories.
Back when I had my own company, a mentor once told me, "If you're not being sued, you're not really in business."
I think those immediate low scores are a sign that you're making it as a writer. You're on people's radar. Most of my stories start out life in the mid-5s, because I get slammed with tons of low scores right out of the gate. Within a day or so, they've by and large been cancelled out by higher ones.
too many people bitch about the scoring as it is...unless the idea is to give them something new to bitch about! LOL! :D

Actually my thinking was that it might encourage readers to try stories that they otherwise wouldn't. Then bitch about them! :-)

That wouldn't be a big list, from 1 aug. to 24 aug. with fewer than 50 votes and score above 7 we have in descending score order:
Suddenly a Succubus - Book Two by Nyx Nyghtingale (8.60)
Traffic Girl: Katie by LiveLocalLateBreaking
Kyle's Story - Book Three by JTrevor
Blondies Have More Fun by Anna Mae Holister
Scarred by Chris Crescent
Love's Last Kiss by Duleigh
By Ruin Redeemed by Dragon Cobolt
Aiden Ascending by INtrinSicliValud
Lake Swing by Nick South
My Son the Cop by Tarl Cabot
Consequences (a Sequel to Being More Social) by Bashful Scribe
The Girlfriend Experience 2 by JeremyDCP
The Immortal, Volume 2 by INtrinSicliValud
Dominus Fields: Rise of the Tank-Born by WrenchingAbuse
In the Valley of Mountain Lions - Book 4 by August the Strong
Core by Mat Twassel
Going for Gold - Short Story by EveryDenial (6.99)
That's six days short but it still effectively puts the kibosh on my idea.
Just to check, are they all ongoing serials? (Just checked - no. Mat Twassel's story was a complete short story)
Thanks for doing the legwork. I'd love to know how you generated that list.

With a search for stories with any date above 2024-08-01 (I should have set 2024-07-31 because stories posted on the date are not listed) sorted by descending score, then just looking manually for a #votes below 50. Then the usual list creation with a search on Title. I did not make a distinction between ongoing or completed.
I think I should have excluded the multi-book stories...

Bah - 'Invalid Input. Please start over.'

@Lazeeez
The search URL still work for me, I guess the token in that url is personal and search result can't be shared.

Sorry, that's over my head. I got the Advanced Search page and when I clicked to start the search, it returned 56803 stories. (The SOL home page says there are 56806 stories, so the missing three is intriguing).
Perhaps I'm not allowed to use someone else's saved search.
Thanks for trying.

As search is CPU intensive, more than likely it's a security measure by Lazeez to avoid server overload.
