People write "vagina" often when they mean "vulva." The vulva is the outside, visible part of the genitals (labia, clitoris, vaginal opening) whereas the vagina is internal, the tube that connects the vulva to the cervix and uterus. Erotic authors often make the mistake.
HOWEVER, "pussy" is used for both the vulva or vagina. So if you use "pussy," you can't make that mistake.

Funny you should mention the whole vulva -vs- vagina thing. Ashley posted Anatomy Class a couple of days ago that touches on sexual anatomy of women. The story was a hoot.

Pussy is also used for women as well. In fact, why don't we use the word pussy for everything female-related and see how ambiguous we can make our stories ;-)

I usually go non-technical with "lips" or "folds" but from experience know that "vulva" is one of Loucks' favorite words!
