If I use filtered HTML out of Word as my preferred posting option (because I like to maintain my italics, etc) can I still upload a single file that has the curly bracketed 'scheduling tags' such as {date:YYYY-MM-DDa} or {date:+3a}?

Why not? {notice} and {end-note} and {block} work within filtered html. The html treats it as text that SOL recognizes.
Thank you, as always, for being the master of all my formatting queries. I assumed it would, but I don't want to upload a whole book and have the submission engine shit itself because I'm dumb.

Yes you can.
However, make sure that there is no additional formatting around those tags. So don't make them bold, or italics etc...
