Good epub reader, not calibre

oldegrump ๐Ÿšซ

I am looking for a good epub reader with the features of Kindle. I do not like the two-page across format of the ones I have tried. I want a reader that allows for resizing of fonts, single page at a time and what I call document style reading.

If you have a mac try Bookreader
https://www.macbookreader.it/wp/

It worked pretty well for me. I think you can chose single page or two page view.

If you are happy with the Calibre Library, you can replace the Calibre viewer by going to preferences -> Interface -> Behavior and uncheck the file format you want to open with another application. This will tell Calibre to use the default Windows app for the Extension.

One option is to use the web Browser:
Choose your web browser as the default program to open .epub files. Install an epub viewer extension in your browser. You also need to allow the extension to handle file urls.
For edge or Chrome I like Beautiful ePub Reader
For Firefox, there is EPUBReader

Alternatively, there are some very fast viewers based on Artiflex mยตPDF like SumatraPDF

If you want a Library management, there is:
* The very old Sony Reader for PC.
* Kobo for Desktop

There is also online libraries (that raise privacy concerns). For example, if you have a google account, you could use https://play.google.com/books and upload your epub files there.
You can then view them from the browser.
However, that doesn't work offline.
Installing the Android App Google Play Books (with an emulator) allow you to access your online library offline.

@Gauthier

You could also send your epub to your kindle device email account
You can then view them in "Kindle for PC" (https://www.amazon.com/kindleapps)
You can also view them in the Browser: https://read.amazon.com/kindle-library

Are you asking for a reader device or for a reader app for your computer? (Kindle is available in hardware and software.)
The title of your posting is ambiguous, "not Calibre" can be interpreted as "a device, no reader app" or as "a reader app, but not calibre".
If you are looking for an app, then for which hardware/OS?

On my Windows system I tried Calibre (both Reader and Editor), 1 file viewer, and Aquile Reader, all free.
I found for EPUBs without DRM the Calibre eBook Editor the best choice. I read the eBooks in its preview window and when I find a typo or another error I change it in its edit window. I use always a copy of the original file, because the Calibre Editor overwrites the opened file when saving changes. I do this edits to have a cleaner text when I read the book the next time.

"1 file viewer" has issues with background color and the < hr / > used as scene breaks. When it is defined as 30% length and centered, it displays it left justified. It doesn't know smaller spaces like hairspace and displays an empty rectangle instead.

The Aquile Reader ignores color settings and any font-family setting in the HTML and CSS. If e.g. the chapter header is another font-family as the chapter text, Aquile ignores this setting. In Conquistador the chapter headings are in a cursive font-family like "Monotype Corsiva" the text is in a serif font. Because a cursive font is implicit italic in style, there is no explicit style setting "italic" for the headers. Aquile ignores the font-family setting and displays the headers in the same font as the text and in font-style "normal", not italic as intended.

I'm curious why not Calibre?

HM.

I am looking for a PC reader app. I asked for readers that were not Calibre because I find the user interface for that program not pleasing. I am using Freda, but I can't get it to display anything but a two-page format. I also cannot get it to change the font size.

I use @Voice app on my Android. Pulls in epub files from SOL with no problem, table of contents and all. I admit I usually use its Voice-to-Text feature and listen at 1.4X. Of course, I do the same for Kindle books, just have to copy and paste in chunks.

OK, I may be missing something here. Can I read Epub files on my Kindle app, without having to pay amazon for books I have already purchased.

Yes, using the various "Send to Kindle" options that Amazon provides, you can upload documents in a number of formats to your library there and access them using your favourite app, including Kindle for PC. See Amazon for details.
The documents will automagically be converted to a format suitable for your Kindle app, i.e. MOBI for older Kindles and KF8 for Kindle for PC. And yes, Amazon will know what you're reading.

I believe kindles are directly using ePub files without converting these days. I email EPUBs to my kindle and have no problem reading them.

If so it's a very recent change. I have a Kindle Paperwhite that's only two years old and it is limited to MOBI, AZW, and basic formats like PDF and TXT. Definitely no EPUB without conversion.

It makes sense since AZW is just MOBI with DRM, so they only need the single codec to allow both formats.

EPUB works only if you send the EPUB through Amazon's mail-to-kindle service. Amazon's servers will convert it. It's in effect since last august.

I'm emailing the files, yes. Sorry, didn't realize it made a difference. It works very well, but you do have to wait a minute for Amazon to send a verification email.
