Continent-wide shortage of mag citrate

StarFleet Carl ๐Ÿšซ

One of those things, along with all of the other things that have happened over the last couple of years, is that there is now an incredible shortage of mag citrate. Those wonderful little bottles that cost $1.12 at Wal-Mart of the 'lemon' flavoring that make the Earth move. Or at least your bowels.

Apparently there was ONE report of an adverse reaction, and somehow they figured out it MAY have Gluconacetobacter liquefaciens in it. So, there's been a 'voluntary' recall on it, as of LAST summer, and there's still no product on the shelves in North America.

I thought this might be of interest to those of us who are getting a bit older and may or may not need 'assistance' that way. I wouldn't have known about it, but I'm getting ready for a colonoscopy tomorrow (yes, today's going to be a crappy day - pun intended) and instead of spending $2.24 plus tax for two bottles and being done with it, I ended up spending close to $20 for the OTC stuff. If nothing else, it shouldn't let things ice up inside - seriously, they use the same stuff that you drink as an aircraft de-icer antifreeze.

What a crock of shit. (pun intended again.)

Double ETA to add I read the label on the bottle wrong. It's not aircraft deicer, but it sure is (eventually) doing a job on me>

My doctor always gives me a prescription to clean me out that costs more than $20. I never used OTC or non-prescription stuff.

My wife is one of those people who only poop about twice a week, and that's if she's lucky. There are a LOT of people that have that. It's one of the reasons they always ask you about regular bowel movements. Mag citrate is an inexpensive way to get the system going again.

ETA: I'm NOT a doctor, nor do I play one on TV. But my wife has been a nurse for more than 30 years, and is Director of Nursing at an Assisted Living facility, where resident constipation is a regular (!) happening.

My newspaper's health supplement claimed that down to once a week was 'normal', that it was changes in bowel habits you need to be suspicious of.

A lot probably depends on what and how much you eat. I would imagine, that as long as you don't have to strain to defecate, you are probably okay even if the frequency is low.

Don't answer this if you don't feel like it, but what are the active ingredient(s) in the prescription?

Have no idea. But it was expensive, even with my insurance.

I can't recall seeing any colons in your stories ;-)

I can see a semi-colon, does that count?

Is that with a semi-colonoscopy?

Constipation is a serious concern in the armed forces. Particularly when eating field rations. MREs, and some similar meals are designed to cause Constipation; or minimize bowel movements.

A decade or so, ago, they introduced a "training ration" fewer calories and less likely to cause constipation.

To prevent such issues I used to pack "hikers/mountaineers rations" from REI (Recreational Equippers International; in Seattle). I also carried a beverage mix similar to, but superior to Gatorade (for hiking, etc., rather than football).

We would also be selective about eating local cuisine.

Keeping hydrated helps, nearly everyone is, at least, slightly dehydrated, much of the time.

A good diet helps. I eat plenty of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Although, I do eat too much that is not good for me.

Not sure about anywhere else but it's freely available in the UK right now.
I was suffering from muscle pain in one or both shins to the extent I could not sleep around 11 months ago. My doc prescribed Magnesium tablets, the package warned about unspecified side-effects. The side-effects you describe hit 2-3 days later and the pain vanished at around the same time, reducing the dosage to zero left me able to function normally again.
I have the tablets behind an imaginary glass, "in emergency break glass". No emergency so far.

My doc prescribed Magnesium tablets

Magnesium citrate? IIRC, that has a high bioavailibility of magnesium.
