I found this post on wattpad. The author is young, in his twenties if that.

I am officially a NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR on the list of 5/29! The Inquisition is at #2 & #3 for Young Adult ebook AND hardback! SO HAPPY!!

My book, The Novice, started on Wattpad. 4 months after I started sharing it, the sample I uploaded had been read over 1 million times. Another 2 months and it was 3 million. NBC news mentioned me in an article and I received an unsolicited offer from an audiobook publisher. I messaged 6 agents asking them for advice and they all requested my manuscript and offered representation, most within 24 hours. The book went on to sell in 11 languages around the world. Less than 10 days after The Inquisition came out, I received a call from my editor telling me I was now a NYT bestseller.

Good grief. That's pretty amazing. Less than 10 days to best-seller list?

I think he mentioned it was a series so maybe people were waiting for the next one to come out.

Taran Matharu, apparently?

So this "Wattpad" is one of the big amateur author sites for mainstream (not erotica) stories? Aha, yes:

I can't get into any actual site content without creating an account there, but some poking with google shows that Wattpad does have erotica also. It's always interesting to see where people are going for porn stories, obviously Amazon kindle is a thriving spot for erotic ebooks, and there's also Smashwords, and it's not difficult to find several more less well known erotica ebook sites.

The difference with Wattpad is that it's a 'Social Media' site. You get the best downloads by 'friending' as many people as possible (reading and promoting their stories in exchange for the same). If you post a top-notch story, it won't even get a glimpse, but a mediocre story promoted by a popular personality will go viral overnight.

It's a great idea, but I can't afford to invest the time to build a following (not if I expect to write). Still, Wattpad authors who've mastered the system are increasingly being courted by the mainstream publishers (after they sell tens of thousands (USD) through independent publishing).

I's mostly teenage girls writing mostly fanfic. It may not be erotica, but from what's discussed (I never actually read anyone's stories there) a lot of these teenage girls write about screwing Harry Stiles and every boy under the sun.
