Apology to Lazeez

Pixy ๐Ÿšซ

Thread locked.

You guys seem to be intent on making me use the banning tool.

I really hate banning people...

I think there is full moon at the moment.... Besides, we are only thinking of you, we don't want your equipment to get, errr, rusty...

Apogee means the point at which an object in orbit is furthest away, so currently Pixy is getting closer ;-)

Just checking to see if I was banned. Just kidding.

I too apologize.

The phrase about aardvarks and kittens stirred up a concern about words and civil debate.

After reading through all of the posts in the locked thread ๐Ÿ”’ ๐Ÿ™ƒ ๐Ÿ’€ ๐Ÿ˜… I found several that provided some of the answers I was looking for.

Specifically the idea that when languages change organically it usually reflects a concensus.

Conversely imposed changes to languages tend to be resisted.

The discussion about jargon is probably relevant too.

Unfortunately, it may be that civil discussion may not be possible in the USA. Because we refuse to come to an agreement on facts. Not in science, sports, politics, nor anything else.

There was also an excellent suggestion to use a Story, rather than a forum topic to explore such ideas.

Perhaps I could do that now. I believe I learned somethings from the discussion, despite some cantankerous posts. There were some thoughtful posts too.

I was mistaken about the matter in Ireland. It is part of my concern about being "confined" to an assisted care facility. I am limited in my access to information!

Just as the Lockdown was being eased, road construction ๐Ÿšง on the only road providing access to where I live also resulted in the "temporary" closure of several nearby bus stops. Rarely have I been able to hobble to the Starbucks 3 miles away ๐Ÿ™„

I am grateful that I have access to SOL. Access to Fantasy Sports sites is blocked ๐Ÿšซ because it was considered "gambling" or so I have been told. ๐Ÿ˜‘

I only looked at the locked thread when I noticed Lazeez had weighed in, and pretty much every thread with over 40-50 posts here - in particular when it is "off topic" for the site - is going to contain flames.

SOL provides a window to the world ๐ŸŒŽ

Really? If a fiction site is your window to the world, where are you incarcerated? N Korea? What organisation is impinging on what would normally be your rights?

Do people gamble on Fantasy Sports? That argument is ludicrous.
Firefox has had the ability to encrypt dns queries for a while now, I'd have thought that would help you bypass censorship.

In a government "assisted living" facility in the Democratic Socialist Soviet of Cascadia. AKA Washington State.

By Edict of the Governor we are the LAST state in the USA, perhaps the World to Still be under Rule by Executive Order of the Governor "due to Covid-19" with significant restrictions upon individuals, businesses, and government (including the Legislature).

Supposedly these restrictions will be lifted in October...

I had a mild heart attack a bit more than a year and a half ago. Because of regulations I had to be transferred out of VA care, and ended up in an assisted living facility. (Supposedly to protect me, but I believe the majority of deaths in this state were in assisted living facilities). The short version is due to regulations "for the Duration of the Emergency" I am in a "Catch 22" regarding my release.

I believe that once the "Emergency has Ended" (officially) that should finally expedite my release.

A Cynic might believe that with a significant loss of "residents" ACLFs, they have an interest in keeping a (im)patient paid for by Federal checks...

Perhaps bureaucratic incompetence is more likely than conspiracy. It's just dang annoying.

Do people gamble on Fantasy Sports? That argument is ludicrous.

Yet that is the "reason" that many administrators for government computer/internet networks state.

I faced this while I was deployed and using MWR or other government networks. On one of my 4 deployments members of my Platoon purchased a satellite dish on the local economy and then rented commercial satellite service from a company in the USA or possibly Europe.

When I served with SOCOM we were not allowed that option.

Sometimes in CONUS we also faced limitations. There is not good internet service, but for a small fee I can use the on-site internet service for the "Day Room" most people here aren't computer savvy. I cannot afford the outside options I might be allowed to use.

Mostly I use my phone, I think a variety of issues result in poor signal strength. So, I sometimes use their very limited internet with my phone.

I must get permission to leave the facility grounds. As mentioned above due to significant road construction there is no sidewalk and parts of the road are coned (or barrel) off. During working hours they sometimes have only one lane open and use flaggers to allow alternating one way travel.

Recently, I have been able to ride a shuttle to a mall not far from here. However, residents have to be On The List. No "Temporary Suspension" (due to someone testing "positive" for Covid-19, AND if they are short employees the "excursion" may be canceled.

You got it a little wrong.

It's the 'People's Democratic Soviet Socialist Republic of Cascadia'.

I have several friends from my hometown that, after getting out of the military, liked the area and stayed. We've been in touch on Facebook - hell, the hometown is so small, I think everyone FROM there is on Facebook so we all stay in touch and know what's going on.

The reason I say this is there are four couples that have completely uprooted from Washington and moved back to Indiana, courtesy of the stupidity of the state government.

@Marius-6

That sucks large sweaty pig nuts. I'm sorry that is happening to you. About two years ago they were contemplating putting me in a home and I was contemplating eating my pistol lead first.

Hopefully things will get straightened out and you will be able to go back to your normal place. Best wishes,

Darian
