Generally it's fall. As for what homecoming is, as I understand it, it's where a schools sports team plays at the home school after playing elsewhere for a time.
It's an overall reunion type event. All alumni are invited to "come home" for a game and special events and parties. Usually, it's a football game. You make sure it's a game against an opponent you are almost certain to beat.

I was home schooled, so what I know is limited to what I learned from friends. I'm not overly impressed by it, and glad I missed all the drama involved.

Technically, homecoming is the first social highlight as it is close to the beginning of the school year and prom is closer to the end of the school year.
