Txt and Doc to Mobi

oldegrump ๐Ÿšซ

Good Morning

I haven't succumbed to the Calibre crowd, but I might.

Is Calibre able to convert TXT and DOC files to a form you can read in Kindle? I have the latest version of Kindle, and I know that MOBI files will soon be supplanted by some thing else, but I find Kindle to be an easier way for my old eyes to read stories.

All help is appreciated.

I use Scrivner for the most part, but have used Calibre as well. Here's Calibre's answer:

E-book conversion

See the section 'Format specific tips' which discusses MSWord and TXT as the first to items.

MOBI has never been the default format for Kindle readers. It is AZW, now AZW3. Kindle readers can handle MOBI files because AZW was built as an extension of MOBI.

MOBI was originally intended as a public open e-book format, but the company behind it went defunct and got bought out by Amazon before MOBI was adopted by anyone else.

Originally, most third party providers of content for Kindle would provide it in a MOBI format because the information for that was available and Amazon did not originally make tools to create AZW files publicly available, but MOBI is old and obsolete.

Amazon provides Kindle users with an email address to send third party books and personal documents to the Kindle.

Amazon no longer supports sending MOBI as a book format for that process. It would go through as a personal document, if it goes through at all (Amazon stopped supporting sending personal documents to Kindle reader for PC).

There are publicly available tools now for building AZW files and with sending an e-book to your kindle from a third party source using the email address provided by Amazon, Amazon will handle converting any e-book format into AZWx on their end.

All this means that SOL providing stories in MOBI format no longer makes sense.

I'm not sure if Lazeez is generating an AZW or just sending the e-pub and letting Amazon handle the conversion to AZWx.

I generate PDF, MOBI, and ePub for my supporters and for Bookapy. Per Lazeez, Bookapy will only support ePub in the future.

I was actually referring to the download buttons on SOL not Bookapy, but that likely means Lazeez has set up SOL to send the ePub to Amazon and let them handle the conversion.

SOL's engine (FS and SFS too) now emails EPUB files to Kindles as that's Amazon's recommendation.

I'm not sure that I should remove the download version of the mobi files. We'll see. I may force all kindle clicks to go through mail. Haven't made a decision yet.

My $0.02(US), you probably should.

The easiest way to get it to your kindle is to use the Amazon mail to kindle from your home account.

I've run into two issue with that in the last year or so.

1. Amazon now treats .mobi files as personal documents not e-books, so it won't be automatically converted like an e-pub and it ends up as a personal document on your Kindle reader which has a few disadvantages.

2. The no longer support sending personal documents to the Kindle reader for PC.

I used to have a Kindle paper white, but it got damaged and for a while I was just using the Kindle reader for PC.

I have an android tablet now and I do have the kindle reader for Android installed on it but I don't use it much.

Unless someone has a really old Kindle Paper white, at this point, they are probably better off in the long run getting an e-pub, using the mail to Kindle and letting Amazon handle the conversion.

getting an e-pub, using the mail to Kindle and letting Amazon handle the conversion.

When I publish on Bookapy, I upload a mobi/awz3 for the Kindle (currently), but I never did that when publishing on Amazon KDP. I always uploaded an epub and let Amazon convert it to a Kindle format.
