Server Move

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

In an attempt to solve our vexing http/https issue that's causing outages for storiesonline whenever we switch to full https, we've designed a new server layout requiring a quick move to different servers.

The interruption shouldn't take long. About an hour max per domain.

Scifistories.com has already been moved to the new servers. Test it out and let me know of any malfunctions.

Scifistories is working great for me. I was wondering why there was an outage for a bit earlier tonight so this explains it.

Thanks.

Keet ๐Ÿšซ

Works great, including downloading zips.

Finestories.com has moved.

Works great too. I did notice that it has a different way of sorting the author story list compared to SOL and Sci-Fi. Don't know if that was already so before the move or that I just didn't notice it before. (Not the column-sort but the drop-down menu).

Scifistories works fine in the East Chicago area. Negligible HTTPS delays when browsing the site, or when burrowing down into story text. Nice work Laz...

Everything seems to be working well.

Tried both Sci and Fine, both worked well and came through quickly (use Satellite Broadband Hughes) out in the boondunes, kansas.

Logged In to both SciFi & FineStories - Both worked perfectly as 'Secured'

I cannot access either Scifistories or Finestories. I can reach the pages, but not being aware of their existance, I never created logon accounts. Working that process now.

Follow-up: Both new accounts can connect and download. Both are somewhat "slower" that normal SOL access, but SOL has been impaired for a week or so now. As mentioned before, excessive retries and beaconing between host names on Tracert. Not debilitating, but noticeable.

What does that mean? I don't have windows, so no tracert.

sunseeker ๐Ÿšซ

no problem with either finestories and scifistories.

Storiesonline is extremely slow even after cookies cleared

8:14pm here in Rio

galen ๐Ÿšซ

same as sunseeker - finestories and SciFi both working fine, but SOL still having periodic TLS handshake delays...

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

@galen

I was doing a final test for a change that I made on SOL to see if it made a difference. Obviously it didn't.

I haven't moved SOL to the new servers yet.

auleher ๐Ÿšซ

I noticed today that the daily story counter was reset @ SOL 1 hour and 23 minutes later than usually, i.e. after 25 hours and 23 minutes.
So perhaps this is somehow related to this outage, perhaps its duration was 1 hour 23 minutes?

SOL is working great for me - Crisp and quick.

Now it's working. Is Murphy on here somewhere?

For me voting didn't work on Wed am but did on Thu pm. Didn't noticeany other probs, occasional redirect warnings earlier.

dsclink3 ๐Ÿšซ

I noticed the voting didn't work when then story was from a secure page (https) but did work when I opened the story from a Not Secure page (showed "Not Secure" in chrome's address bar). My old bookmarks link to the http server so I use those when voting. The vote count and score updates on both https and http versions of the author's page.

Try logging in at SOL and then use the link bottom left on the home page to go to scifistories. It should pass the login along (single login for all three sites). If that doesn't work try clearing cookies and login again.

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

Alright, SOL moved.

So far performing well on all https.

Just an observation, maybe pointless: during all the server fubar, when I clicked on the circle 'i' in firefox's address bar, it gave me some info and said 'this site is insecure', and now it does nothing at all. I can see the lock icon for https, and everything works (always did for me, just slowly), but I did notice the change after the server move.

fwiw, dunno if that's how it should work since I don't usually check that stuff.

... edit - I get info on Finestories and SciFi-stories (connection, content blocking, permissions) when Clicking on the 'i' logo, just not here. whatever

Ernest Bywater ๐Ÿšซ

I just reposted a few revised stories in my usual manner of uploading the same story to the submission wizard at all three sites at the same time - it all worked perfectly.

In response to DrWN's comment about the FF 'i' button. I tried that and found you had to hit the button dead center or it didn't activate, but when I hit it right all three sites came up with the same information and options. That's an internal to FF option setting only.

auleher ๐Ÿšซ

something went wrong with SOL, not sure if it is related to the moving of the server, because it occurred just 20 minutes ago.
Zip files no longer can be downloaded, but errors are different:
- could not create folder
- could not open file ....htm
- You tried to access the address https:....zip, which is currently unavailable
However, downloading of epubs is working fine.
So what is the difference? Zips are created on the fly and epubs are not?

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

@auleher

It was a security setting that I just fixed. Now they should all work. Try again.
