A man in world were only a few males remain.

claymoras ๐Ÿšซ

Since reading "one-in-ten by FinalStand" I have been itching to read stories with similar premise. The ones I found almost always go full femdom but that ruins the tension/story for me. The idea of men trying to survive and retain their masculinity in a woman's world is hot. Anyone know stories similar to that?

Also dead tree, David Brin's Glory Season. Female protagonists, so maybe not what you want.

Isn't that a premise of cmsix's Nanovirus?

There should be plenty around as it's a standard wish-fulfillment trope - the alpha male fighting off bad guys to protect his harem.

The Nanovirus series starts with Red and Victor. A great series of stories.

Usually, that's more of a story motif. So it can be used to write a wish-fulfillment stories, yet usually that's the source of the story tension and conflict, protecting the most vulnerable women, especially those he's taken under his wing.

When I write those types of stories, I also include a couple who have no desire to sleep with the male protagonist, yet he still elects to protect them anyway, as the stronger the group overall, the better for everyone's survival, so it's more quid pro quo rather than their 'breeding potential' at stake.

Yet, I often go out of my way to address the least common story elements in any story, just because those are the least common story elements.

In David Weber's Honor Harrington universe, there is a planet Grayson where a lot more females are born (or survive infancy?), although during the books that was beginning to be addressed through better medical technology, etc.

There was a dead-tree book from 1970s or 1980s which described a "lost colony" where most male children died in infancy, creating a large female/male ratio. I can't remember the author or title, alas.

I read Weber's story over on the other place (LE) a few years ago, it started great and stayed strong but towards the end it's like the author got bored and just finished everything way too quickly and left a LOT unexplained and unfinished

Weber leaving a lot unexplained and unfinished is on purpose, as between his solo novels and collaborations with Ringo and/or Flint and other authors, the Honoverse has gotten close to twenty novels ...

Breeder World is a Universe by Ernest Bywater.

A bio-weapon is released in a world wide war has killed off 70% of the world population and rendered most of the population sterile. A new world government and world order has arisen. The rarest commodity on the planet are fertile men. The majority of children conceived are female and many male children are born sterile as well. Social upheavals occur and many adjustments are needed. The continuation of the race is at extreme risk, but humanity and society evolves to meet these new challenges as every aspect of society changes. If you wish to write a story in this universe please don't infringe on the characters or ship in Breeder Ships. Please read the prologue titled Breeder World before reading any of the stories.

Virgin Planet by Poul Anderson. Dead tree

Lost colony. There are NO men. Tech based parthenogenisis is practiced. Essentially a woman gives birth to her clone.

Then a man lands.

Maj. Mercer awakens after 50 years in a cryogenic state to find the world has greatly changed. The last war left much of the world devastated but a virus killed all men on the planet. He's awakened in the community of Ilith, a rural village where the surviving women live a simple but difficult life. They have children from frozen sperm but only females have survived with newborn boys dying within a few days of their birth. His presence immediately causes dissension in the community but its when he realizes that a neighboring community isn't sharing electricity that his aggressive behavior turns to tragedy. In the end, there is only one decision for them to make - a decision that is particularly difficult for their leader, Hera.

Have you read Houston, Houston Do You Read Me?? I cannot recall the author's name, but I do remember the story. It may not be what you are looking for, but it raises philosophical, ethical and moral issues that I have not seen presented elsewhere.
