Good do-over stories

Foxtrot2134 🚫
Updated:

I've been interested in do-over stories lately and having just had to drop Charlie Foxtrot's "A New Past" due to a plot event which i personally feel ruined a lot of the fun of the story (and felt a bit forced to move the plot in a certain way. All i'll say is Chapter 48's ending was completely out of the blue and disappointing to see). Up till that point i really enjoyed the story so i'm making this thread.

here's generally what i'm looking for:

- Do-over story OR coming-of-age stories

- Good romance with some sex

- Male protagonist.

- either 1v1 romantic relationship or 1MalexmanyFemale polygamy harem (harem members must be exclusive to other harem members only).

- fa/fa and Fa/Fa tags are welcome but arent strictly necessary. M/M tags as well as cheating, swinging, sharing and related tags/themes are not wanted at all

- No deaths of romantic partners/harem members (see the first paragraph of this post for why). no non-con/rape/abuse etc either.

- can be "big" scale plot (changing the world for the better) or can be "small" scale (making life better for the protag, romantic partners, family and close friends).

- no tearjerkers or stories heavy on doom and gloom or melodrama.

- No fantasy or heavy sci-fi

- do-over start points no earlier than the 70s

- VERY IMPORTANT: QUALITY AND LENGTH MOST BOTH BE GOOD. I LIKE LONG MEATY STORIES THAT ARE HIGH QUALITY IN CONTENT.

- NO PREMIER STORIES

i await your recommendations.

Doing it all over by Al Steiner certainly fits the bill.

i have actually already read that one. Quite enjoyed it as one of the first do-over stories on here i read.

Building a Better Past by tendertouch

Paul's Redemption by novascriptus

I suspect "The Transmogrification of Jacob Hopkins" and "Lexi Redux" fail the melodrama requirement, but it's a near thing in both cases, so you might try them, cautiously. The first includes an MtF trans partner, which some consider violates an m/m ban, even though she's post-op.

ETA: whoops, sorry, Lexi Redux isn't male protagonist, didn't notice that.

I've read Building A Better Past. I quite enjoyed it and the twist reveal at the end that tied everything together was superb. i only wish that it was longer but i understand why tendertouch ended it where they did.

also these replies reminded me that it should elaborate on timeline points that are preferred and a few other things i forgot.

Rewind by Don Lockwood. Incomplete but I think it could well be considered done at High School graduation. It does have a tragic event early on, but not a harem member.

Rebirth by John Wales. Writing is not great, but the plot is fairly entertaining.

Paul's Redemption by novascriptus.

Retreads by Rotedrachen. A bit of wish-fulfillment alternate timeline, as many of the "big-scale" do-overs end up as.

Echoes by Sea-Life.

Majestic removed from SOL, but available on KU. Very much a "big-scale" focusing more on politics and adventure than personal development.

Hindsight 20/20 by SmokinDriver -- the ending was not great, but the plot was basically done.

A New Past -- agree on chapter 48. Well-written otherwise.

"Variation on a Theme" by Grey Wolf is a continuing series, but it has 4 completed novels.

If you want the aspects of revised timeline and coming of age, Banadin's Richard Jackson saga, and "A True History" by StaFleet Carl are possible.

"A True History", "Variation on A Theme" and "Hindsight 20/20" look interesting. thanks.

yeah, A New Past is really well written which is what makes Chap 48 so frustrating. the much earlier character death was so well done in a way where it hurt but it fit so well, helped the protag grow as a person and didnt feel like a asspull so i dont know why CF did the dirty like that. tis the perils of being a reader i guess.

Because it set up the rest of the story, including a gut-wrenching conclusion. Everything the MC does after that death is aimed by that event at his final action.

"A True History" isn't a do-over, just so you know. It's an alternate universe story about Superman.

If I recall, "Hindsight 20/20" has swinging? I might mix it up with something else, it's been a long time since I read it, but I think there was in at least one of the stories in the series.

Rebirth by John Wales

I'd also be a bit wary of Wales' stories, he has a tendency to kill off a love interest or two, which you mentioned you'd like to avoid. I don't remember this particular story, but I do remember it happening in more than one of his stories.

Once More with Feelings by The Night Hawk might work for you. The protagonist is originally male but is reborn in a teen female body. The original owner of said body is in the protagonist's original body.

The inner monologue feels masculine, especially early on, and the character remains attracted to females, so this really comes down to your preference.

It's a very good story, up with the best in my opinion, although it has some supernatural elements near the end that aren't tagged.

Rlfj's https://storiesonline.net/s/68384/a-fresh-start
Restart in 1968 running through to the 2010s. Some sex, fidelity to partner a given. Romance. Drama, but not melodrama. Makes the world a better place without resorting to science fiction. Long. There is a seperate epilogue by Rlfj and an in universe side story by XofDallas.

I loved how he twisted real life events and people in his story. How he handled 9/11 was classic.

Lazlo's https://storiesonline.net/s/18499/emend-by-eclipse
Restart in, IIRC, 1973. Sex is only off stage. Some romance, Ma/Fa & Fa/Fa. Long. Making the world a better place is part of the theme.

Female protagonist, which is rather rare for do-overs.

"Foxtrot", I completely understand your frustration and disappointment with Chapter 48 of "A New Past". I remember when I first read it and wrote to complain. I told the author I was through with it but...... eventually I continued. The MC's story continues and is very interesting. When it concluded there were some complaints about how the story ended but I feel it was a well thought out and appropriate conclusion. I think if you give it some time to get over your personal grief (and yes we can grieve over fictional characters) and continue you will be very happy with the continued story and conclusion.

@Foxtrot2134

Although it is not a "Do Over" as in reliving a life, the "Stupid Boy" and "Better Man" series, read a lot like many "Do Overs"

In a way, the series is a "Do Over" the story starts with the MC waking up for his first day of high school. Quite soon the MC's life was spiraling out of control during the end of his last year of middle school, resulting in chaos and near tragedy. He was "banished" to his uncle's farm, and begins to build a new life.

Many tropes of "Do Overs" occur in the series. The MC's "super power" is a willingness to work hard, and seek mentoring. At times it is almost "Over the Top" most events are believable, it is the totality of events...

Basically it is a fictional story about a young "Tom Brady" or "Bo Jackson" or "Michael Jordan" like character.

I enjoy it, and due to circumstances, I am re-reading it for a third time. (Between writing my own stories.) I finally might be able to get internet for my home, and thus my computer, so I may begin posting stories again. I can read, and access the forums via my phone πŸ“± but not post stories.

I think you're mixing up Coming of Age stories (aka Bildungsroman) with Do-Over here. Just because most Do-Over stories are also Coming of Age stories does not mean that all Coming of Age stories will appeal to someone who is specifically looking for Do-Over stories.
