Your opinion

Think about all of the stories here on SOL that you have read.

Which author offers the most believable depictions of a different society and reality from ours?

My vote goes to Argon for his 'In The Navy' stories.

There are many others.

What is your favorite?

Colt45 does a good job. Try Synergy (misspelled sinner guy.)

Al Steiner's A Perfect World and its sequels does a pretty good job of world-building a culture that's vastly different than ours. It has some frustrating elements, but I'm not sure if that's because of a lack of believability or just the author's style and focus.

I thought aroslav's The Transmorgrification of Jacob Hopkins Series did a pretty good job of exploring possible implementation issues around a requirement of universal service.

Thanks all. I've read these stories in past years and have re-read them in 2022.

@Dicrostonyx

I see the entirety of Steiner's Mars tales as a logical extension of our current world. Corporations control politicians and create conflicts to distract from their acts of maximum profit at the expense of everyone and everything else.

The only drawback I see is we do not have a financially affordable means to get out of this gravity well. Costs too much money to lift a kilo of payload mass to LEO. If a means is found to lift millions of tons to build the initial infrastructure, then... well, at least the solar system would be exploitable.

Anyone else have suggestions?
