I think 'North of the River' and 'A Reluctant Hero' in the Greenies universe may be close to what you are looking for. A soldier in a combat situation hooks up with a cheerleader.
Before ye read the private know it's unfinished and abandoned which is a damn shame because it's one of the best sci-fi 'mech' stories on this site
