I'm looking for a fictional story (not sci-fi or fantasy) where the public becomes entranced by the capers of a criminal gang. Preferably set in the U.S.A., but the era does not matter.
I've heard there were several such gangs for real in our past - Bonnie & Clyde; Jesse James; Machine Gun Kelly, and others, but am unsure just how popular they actually were. A single caper would suffice if it were dramatic enough to get the public on the gang's side.
Does such a story exist? Preferably on SOL.
