in need of another editor

Pars001 ๐Ÿšซ

I realize that many people don't edit as fast as I write, I also realize that we all have lifes. That is why I am thinking of 2 I call them proofers I don't want someone to rewrite my story what's the point it wouldn't be mine anymore. I just need another proofer.

Editors rarely 'rewrite your story', and even if they suggest something, you don't have to keep it, it's just a suggestion that the passage isn't working. You can simply rewrite it in your own words.

Pars001, you might want to describe what you're looking for (genre, story length, story codes, and/or a short story description). That way editors have a better idea what you're writing.

Most editors and proofreaders have lives. If someone told you "Get a Life", they didn't mean lifes. You announced the need and demonstrated one of the reasons. Good marketing.

I will appeal to the next editor/proof reader to consider if "proofer" is a word. I suppose it depends on context. I might be a little disturbed if someone called me a proofing proofer when they were angry. It sounds a little bit derogatory. Must be the PR in the front of the word, kind of spits "dumb proofer." I kind of miss being a reader.

The proper term is "Copy Editor", and they handle grammar, punctuation and word choices. 'Proofer' is someone who looks at the book when it's been printed and searches for printing errors.

Different editor types, they consist of:

I'm sure I'll be corrected by any actual editors, but here's the general lay of the land in editorville:

Developmental Editing - They get you started before you write your story, examining your ideas, plot, story outline, etc.
Substantive Editing - A "Content" editor who focus on content (instead of mistakes). They look for consistencies, plot holes, incorrect characterizations, etc.
Copyediting - What most of us think of as 'editor', the guy who looks for typos, grammar and punctuation.
Proofreading - The 'last stage edit' for old time publishers (the guy who looks for publication errors).

Proofreader may also cover alpha and beta readers. These are people you trust to tell you your poop smells like shit. They'll read your story and tell you whether it works or not (i.e. will it be well-received, or is it boring as shit?)

The real life situation is the first three get done as one by the editor examining your manuscript for the print publisher.

If you're lucky enough to get a contract with a traditional publisher, otherwise, they expect you to hire your own. And if you're publishing independently, then all the costs are your own. Most of us will never see a Developmental editor, we'll get 'substantive editing' from fellow authors (if at all), and we get copyediting from amateur editors here on SOL.

I wasn't asking out of curiosity, I was suggesting you include it, so editors would know without having to search out the information. You wouldn't think it's necessary, but it makes a real difference in response rates.

One question. What are occational romances? Would that be romances involving eight people? Or maybe octopi?

Oh, you mean "Occasional".
