At the end of stories there is a clickable area that says "Similarly Tagged Stories:" Sometimes there is a list of stories that are probably tagged similarly to the story just read. Sometimes not, but I suspect there are at least some similarities. Every once in a while, I click on that and nothing happens. I suppose the story I just read is either not tagged with enough tags, or there are no other stories with similar tags. Does anyone know anything about how this works? Sometimes the recommended stories are much different than the one these stories are supposed to be like. I don't recall ever seeing stories by the same author as the story just read. There seem to be a limited number of stories selected by the process, I have seen the same story recommended after a number of stories I have read.

I suppose the process was designed to help readers find other stories to read on SOL but I haven't seem many that have appealed to me. Is this something reviewers could help with, listing stories that seem similar and with similar appeal to the reviewer?

I never found that useful. It must find stories with the same story codes, but that doesn't mean they're the same kind of story.

It's most useful when you're in a specific genre, like "incest", and it suggests other similar stories. It's not as useful when you're reading a sci-fi story and it recommends a lesbian mystery story. However, what I commonly find is that, since many of my stories in a particular series are all coded the same, it'll recommend the other stories in the series (even if they're not in the correct order).

I've just checked what it comes up with for some of my stories. IMO, the more mainstream the story, the better the matches, and some of them piqued my interest. On the other hand, some of the suggestions for my less mainstream stories left me scratching my head.

Indeed. I awarded Pantheon my top rating of three stars. The highest rating I've awarded to Lazlo Zalezac stories is two stars, to Mothers and Daughters and A. King and His Queen.

The highest rating I've awarded to Laslo Zalezac stories is two stars, to Mothers and Daughters and A. King and His Queen.

Most readers give Laslo's stories higher ratings than you do. He has 67 stories on SOL. Eleven are rated in the sevens, the rest except one that isn't rated are eights or nines. There are a half dozen reviews for the one not rated, Service Society, and all the reviewers gave it 10's for Appeal.

Puff Dragon has ten stories on SOL. Three are rated in the eights, two are in the sixes, and the rest are rated in the sevens. I withdraw my comment that Laslo's stories are all better than Pantheon's. On average many readers would prefer a story by Laslo than one by Puff Dragon.

I completely agree, there's something about Lazlo's stories that resonates with many readers. I have theories about why that might be but to publicise them in open forum might be highly controversial. :(

I can see how it might come across that way but it wasn't meant to be. It's just that I don't think I'm capable of explaining why I don't think an author is the best thing since sliced bread without appearing to run them down. And the same for the readers ...

So I'll stick to the occasional blog mentioning the stories I particularly like.

DiD is a Universe, Lazlo is an Author, while the system sorts on the tags which are something all together different.

the story has these tags - Consensual, Science Fiction, Slow - so it's looking for other stories with any of the same tags. Mind you, they may have other tags as well. If any of the other stories didn't have one of those tags, then you may have a complaint. I only checked one of the listed stories and it has all three of those tags in its description so it's similar TAGGED.

I took a look at a few of them as well as the Laslo story.

Laslo's DiD story is coded Consensual, Science Fiction, Slow.

All of the listed similarly coded stories also have those three codes (along with a bunch more).

Looking at a story with more tags and the first story in it's similarly tagged stories list, they have 11 tags in common, but both have a significant number of distinct tags as well.

I also noticed that the list was different each time the page was re-loaded, so there is a random element as well.

This doesn't seem particularly useful to me as is.

Needs to show the codes for the listed stories with the common codes highlighted or be changed to list identically coded stories.
